Four Jayhawks Receive WNYAC Special Award Recognition

BUFFALO – To wrap up the athletic achievements for the 2022-23 academic year, four Jamestown Community College athletes received Western New York Athletic Conference Special Awards.

 

Freshman men’s soccer player Alex Watt (Belfast, Northern Ireland/Campbell College) was named Co-Freshman Male Athlete of the Year, freshman swimmer Madison Johnson (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) was named Co-Freshman Female Athlete of the Year, sophomore men’s basketball player Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) was named Co-Male Academic Athlete of the Year, with sophomore volleyball player Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) being named the Female Academic Athlete of the Year.

 

Alex Watt, Men’s Soccer – WNYAC Co-Freshman Athlete of the Year

Watt had an outstanding freshman season for the Jayhawks, setting a new school record of goals scored with 15 goals. Watt’s 15 goals also ties him for most goals in a career. Watt also led the conference in total points, tallying 30 points which also tied the school record for single season points.

 

Watt’s year was recognized on both the conference and regional stage, earning All-WNYAC Team honors and was named to the NJCAA Region 3 Second Team All-Region. Watt was also a two-time NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Week.

 

Madison Kramer, Women’s Swimming & Diving – WNYAC Co-Freshman Athlete of the Year

Kramer had a very historic season in the pool for the Jayhawks, breaking countless records, earning numerous all-region honors, and being recognized on the regional and national stage as the top swimmer. Kramer set eight new school records, two regional swim meet records, as well as one new pool record at Monroe Community College. Throughout the season, Kramer was named NJCAA Region 3 Swimmer of the Week three times.

 

Kramer’s success in the regular season carried over into the postseason where she earned NJCAA Region 3 First Team All-Region honors eight times. While at regionals, Kramer was named the NJCAA Region 3 Swimmer of the Meet and NJCAA Region 3 Swimmer of the Year.

 

Kramer’s stellar season was capped off at the 2023 NJCAA Swimming & Diving National Championships where she earned All-American honors in eight events. With the strong performance at nationals and throughout the season, Kramer was named the NJCAA Non-Scholarship Swimmer of the Meet as well as the NJCAA Non-Scholarship Athlete of the Year.

 

Traden Gray, Men’s Basketball & Golf – WNYAC Co-Male Academic Athlete of the Year

Gray was the definition of “student-athlete” during his time as a Jayhawk, finishing with a cumulative GPS of 4.0 as a Business Administration major.

 

Gray say success in athletics as well, as the two-sport athlete was named to the NJCAA Region 3 First Team All-Region team in basketball while receiving NJCAA Region 3 All-Region honors in golf.

 

On the hardwood, Gray led the region in rebounds per game as well as blocks per game. On the golf course, Gray posted his best finish at the Jayhawk Invitational, tying for second place with a 77. Gray also had a solid four days at the 2023 NJCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championships, tying for 21st place.

 

Claire Pumford, Volleyball - WNYAC Female Academic Athlete of the Year

Pumford also exemplified what it was to be a student-athlete, excelling in both the classroom and on the court. Pumford also saw a cumulative GPA of a 4.0 as a Business Administration major.

 

On the court, Pumford was named to the All-WNYAC Team. Pumford was second on the team in kills (180) as well as digs (296).
