Nate Johnson Collects Three Hits In Game One; Jayhawks Drop Two To Onondaga CC

SALAMANCA – While taking a quick trip out east on 86, the Jamestown Community College baseball team dropped a pair of games against Onondaga Community College Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Jayhawks (3-13, 2-4 Region 3 West) dropped the first contest by a score of 16-7 and fell by a score of 16-5 in game two of the doubleheader.

 

Game 1: Onondaga Community College 16 – Jamestown Community College 7

Shortstop Nate Johnson (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern High) had a stellar game at the plate, going three-for-three and was a double shy of hitting for the cycle while driving in a pair of runs. Center fielder Timothy Johnson (San Tan Valley, AZ/Comb HS) and first baseman Kenny Nickson III (Erie, PA/Erie HS) also drove in two runs each.

 

After being tied 2-2 after an inning of action, the Lazers scored seven runs in the top half of the second inning to give them a 9-2 lead. T. Johnson was able to get a run back, driving home right fielder Hayden Hoag (Salamanca. NY/Salamanca HS) to make it 9-3.

 

With a scoreless inning in the third, OCC added a run in the fourth to make it 10-2. The Jayhawks added a pair of runs to make it 10-5 where T. Johnson hit a sac fly to bring home second baseman Riley Piazza (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) followed by a fielders choice by Nickson III to bring home Hoag.

 

The Lazers added another run in the sixth before N. Johnson hit a two-run moonshot to left center field to make it 11-7 going into the final inning of play. OCC was able to pull away in the seventh, scoring five runs.

 

Zach Rohlin (Russell, PA/Eisenhower HS) earned the loss on the mound, going one and one-third innings, surrendering eight earned runs on five hits. Alex Kemery (Youngsville, PA/Youngsville HS) went five innings on the bump, conceding six earned runs on eight hits. Kodi Colton (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley HS) closed out the game for JCC, giving up a pair of runs on three hits.

 

Game 2: Onondaga Community College 16 – Jamestown Community College 5

In the backend of the day's doubleheader, Piazza led the offense by going two-for-three with an RBI while catcher Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago HS) and center fielder De'Sean Rogers (Winter Haven, FL/Winter Haven HS) each had two stolen bases on the day.

 

The Jayhawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning thanks to N. Johnson scoring on a drop third strike, Tanner Potter's (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg HS) one-run single to score Hennessy, and a fielder's choice by Piazza to score Potter.

 

OCC answered in the second, scoring three runs to tie the game at 3-3. Rogers regained the lead for JCC by stealing home to make it 4-3.

 

The Lazers scored eight unanswered runs to give them an 11-4 lead after four innings of action. JCC tacked on another run in the fifth with third baseman Lucas Marsh scoring on an error.

 

Potter earned the loss on the mound, surrendering four earned runs on six hits in three innings of work. Walt Rybczynski (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis HS) came into relief for two innings, giving up zero earned runs, three hits, and striking out two batters. Timothy Beimel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys HS) closed the game out, conceding five earned runs on five hits.

 

The Jayhawks' doubleheader schedule for this afternoon against Gannon University has been cancelled. JCC will be back in action this Saturday, April 8th, as they host Genesee Community College with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
