Jayhawks Erase An Eight-Run Deficit To Split Twin Bill With SUNY Broome

BOLIVAR - In a pair of games played at Bolivar-Richburg High School, the Jamestown Community College baseball team came down from a 9-1 deficit in the second game to split the opening series against SUNY Broome Community College Thursday afternoon.

 

Game 1: SUNY Broome Community College 8 - Jamestown Community College 4

First baseman Yordangel Gonzalez (Miami, FL/Miami Jackson Sr. HS) kept his bat hot to start the afternoon, collecting three hits including two doubles and an RBI.

 

The Jayhawks (9-8, 8-4 Region 3 West) faced a two hole heading into the bottom of the third inning before putting four runs on the board to take a 4-2 lead. The Hornets put up two more runs over the next two innings before stretching their lead to 7-4 after the conclusion of the sixth inning.

 

Pitcher Riley Piazza (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) started the outing, giving up four runs, two earned, and seven hits in four and a third of work. Alex Kemery (Youngsville, PA/Youngsville HS) earned the loss on the mound, giving up three runs on two hits in one and two thirds innings of work. Jackson Yost (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) closed the game out, giving up one run of two hits and striking out a batter.

 

Game 2: Jamestown Community College 13 - SUNY Broome Community College 12

Broome kept up their offense early in the game, jumping out to a 9-1 lead after their at bats in the fourth inning. From that point on, life slowly crept back into the Jayhawks, outscoring the Hornets 12-3 over the next three and a half innings of play to get the win.

 

Left fielder Wyatt Hennessy (Mukowango, WI/Mukwonago HS) showed out at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a triple while bringing in a career-high seven RBIs. Gonzalez also added a strong bat, adding three more hits and two RBIs on the day. Pitcher/shortstop Nate Johnson (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern High) had two knocks including a double to go along with two RBIs.

 

It was a collective effort on the mound with JCC using four arms to capture the win. Johnson started the game, going three innings while surrendering five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out five. Walt Rybczynski (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis HS) saw action in the fourth, giving up four runs on five hits. Kenny Nickson III (Erie, PA/Erie HS) got his first win on the mound, going two innings while giving up three runs on one hit. Bryce Jackson (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) earned the save, slamming the door shut on any coming back, giving up one hit and striking out two batters in the final frame.

 

The teams will meet once again on this Saturday, April 16th, as they travel to SUNY Broome Community College for a 1 p.m. start.
