Piazza's Heroics Lifts Jayhawks In 15-Inning Thriller; Jayhawks Split With Finger Lakes CC

CANANDAIGUA – In a late-season matchup in Region 3, the Jamestown Community College baseball team came away with a split against host Finger Lakes Community College Thursday afternoon.

 

The Jayhawks (10-18, 9-9 Region 3 West) grinded out a 15-inning thriller to win 10-6 in game one and fell to the Lakers 9-4 in game two.

 

Game 1: Jamestown Community College 10 – Finger Lakes Community College 6

The JCC offense was led by centerfielder Timothy Johnson (San Tan Valley, AZ/Comb HS) who had a pair of hits today including a three-run home run. Shortstop Nate Johnson (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern High) and second baseman Riley Piazza (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) also had a pair of hits during the game.

 

After trailing 1-0 going into the third inning, T. Johnson hit an inside the park home run to take the 3-1 lead with N. Johnson and left fielder Timothy Johnson (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys HS) coming into score. FLCC did add another run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2.

 

In the seventh, the Lakers scored the tying run to send the game into extras.

 

After seven scoreless innings of play, the Jayhawks offense woke up, scoring seven runs in the top of the 15th inning. Piazza's two-run single got the scoring going with T. Johnson and third baseman Chris Navarro (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) coming into score.

 

Pitcher Walt Rybczynski (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis HS) started the game, going four innings while surrendering two earned runs on four hits. De'Sean Rogers (Winter Haven, FL/Winter Haven HS) came in for relief, going seven innings allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out three batters. Tanner Potter (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg HS) earned the win on the mound, going four innings while allowing three earned runs on two hits and striking out four batters.

 

Game 2: Finger Lakes Community College 9 – Jamestown Community College 4

In the backend of the doubleheader, JCC was led by right fielder Minjong Seong (Hanam-Si, South Korea/Baemyeong HS) with a pair of hits including a double and two RBIs. First baseman Kenny Nickson III (Erie, PA/Erie HS) added a pair of hits with catcher Kameron Melendez (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) and T. Johnson each hitting extra-base hits.

 

T. Johnson added another home run on the day, hitting another inside the park home run in the first inning to help the Jayhawks take the early 1-0 lead. The Lakers responded in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs to make it 5-1.

 

JCC was able to get a run back in the fourth inning with Nickson III hitting a one0run single to bring designated hitter Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago HS).

 

After four more runs scored by FLCC in innings five and six, JCC had one last chance to make a comeback in the top of the seventh. Seong hit a two-run double to bring in Navarro and Nickson III but the comeback would fall short.

 

Pitcher Ethan Phillips (East Durham, NY/Cairo-Durham HS) earned the loss on the bump, going two-thirds innings where he surrendered five earned runs on three hits. Zach Rohlin (Russell, PA/Eisenhower HS) came in for relief, going four and one-third inning allowing one earned run on four hits. Eddie Bartoli (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown HS) closed the game out, pitching one inning while surrendering three earned runs on three hits.

 

The Jayhawks' home doubleheader this Saturday, April 22nd, against Finger Lakes Community College has been postponed to next Tuesday, April 25th, with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
