Jayhawks Named Northeast District Runner Ups

GARDEN CITY – Competing in the 2023 NJCAA Northeast District Championships, the Jamestown Community College wrestling team finished as runner ups with a team score of 57 points.

 

Brendon Ramsey (Panama, NY/Panama HS) was the lone champion for the Jayhawks, placing first in the 133 pound weight class to receive the automatic bid into nationals. In Ramsey's lone match of the day, he grinded out a 6-4 decision win over Joseph Petrone of Nassau Community College.

 

De'Aonte Hutchinson (Baltimore, MD/Edgewood HS) placed second in the 125 pound weight class. In his first match, Hutchinson defeated Joshua Gill of Niagara County Community College by a 6-4 decision victory. In the championship match, Hutchinson was defeated by Kevin Lopez of Nassau Community College via fall.

 

Luke Potts (Pittsburgh, PA/West Allegheny HS) placed second in the 141 pound weight class, falling in his lone match to Ryan Paladino of Nassau Community College by 3-1 in overtime. James Rankin (Cleveland, OH/Garfield Heights) kept with the theme, placing second in the 149 pound weight class, In his first match, Rankin grinded out a 2-1 overtime win over Nikolis Voelker of Niagara County Community College. In the championship match, Rankin was defeated by Kris Ketchum of Nassau Community College via fall.

 

Alex Christy (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia HS) also placed second in the 184 pound weight class, making his way to the championship match by receiving a medical forfeit win over Eamaen Hill of SUNY Ulster Community College. In the championship match, Christy was defeated by Jaimeson Shea of Nassau Community College by a 10-5 decision victory. In the 197 pound weight class, Brock Johnson (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) placed second, falling to Isaiah Lee of Nassau Community College by a 4-1 decision win.

 

Heading to nationals with Ramsey will be Hutchinson, Potts, Rankin, Christy, and Johnson on wild card bids. The group of Jayhawks who will be heading to nationals were also named to the NJCAA Region 3 All-Region Team.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action on Friday, March 3rd, as they travel to Council Bluffs, Iowa for the 2023 NJCAA Wrestling National Championships.
