Jayhawks Stay Hot on Sophomore Day

JAMESTOWN, NY - Jamestown Community College made it back-to-back upset wins by topping Monroe Community College 89-80 on sophomore day.

This one didn't start like JCC was taking home a win as MCC did all the scoring in the first 2:30 Mohamed Soumahoro made it 5-0 early on.

That's when JCC went on a run. Jhamien Smith stopped the bleeding and got Jamestown on the board with a fastbreak layup. Smith tied for a team-high 25 on the afternoon.

It was a tied affair at the 16-minute mark, before the Jayhawks put together another offensive outburst. Jean Saint-Fort scored five quick points. That was followed up by Samad Bailey and Matthew Bohurjak knocking down shots to lift JCC on a 20-5 run and make it a 27-12 advantage. The sophomores scored 25 and 20, respectively.

MCC started to chip away, getting the hole down to just six at 37-31 before Bohurjak stayed hot from distance. The Cleveland native knocked down six of his seven three-point attempts. Jamestown took an 11-point lead to the half, 46-35.

The long-distance calls continued to connect at the start of the second half, with Smith splashing his only three on the day.

The Tribunes made things very interesting in the middle part of the second. A Kenneth Tyree jump shot brought this to a one-point game, 53-52 JCC.

From there, the duo of Bohurjak and Smith hit back-to-back buckets to stretch things back out to 10-points. Monroe never closed the gap closer than five after that point.

JCC knocked down clutch free throws to close out the nine-point win. Jamestown now waits for the regionals, which take place March 2nd and 3rd.
