Jayhawks Season Ends Just Short of Region III Finals

The JCC Jayhawks Men's Basketball Team (18-13) went on the road to face the Cougars of Genesee Community College (18-13) in the Region III, Division II Final Four held at Niagara County Community College.  The Jayhawks and Cougars had met twice during the regular season (with the Cougars winning the first time at home 78-65 and the Jayhawks winning  the second time at home in an epic overtime thriller) and this game figured to be a close scoring affair.

The two teams played hard from the beginning and after 10 minutes of play the Cougars held a slim 3 points lead over the Jayhawks 15-12.  The Cougars would then pull away from the Jayhawks outscoring them 12-2 and with 5 minutes left it was all Cougars 27-14.  The Jayhawks continued to play their game and were able to reduce the Cougars lead and the score at halftime read Cougars 33, Jayhawks 24.

The second half saw both teams open up their offenses and after 4 minutes the Jayhawks had mounted a comeback and were only down 42-37.  But the Cougars again went on a run and with 10 minutes left to play things were looking desperate for the Jayhawks as the Cougars had built a 60-45 lead.  But the Jayhawks continued their assault at the basket undaunted and with 2 minutes left to play had narrowed the Cougars lead and were down 76-65.  The Cougars proved their worth as an opponent and went 8-8 from the free throw line in the closing minutes to stop the Jayhawks comeback attempt and advance to the Region III finals by downing the Jayhawks 84-73.
