Jayhawks Can't Overcome Slow Start in Winter Classic Opener

JAMESTOWN, NY - JCC couldn't overcome an extremely slow start to their 2023 Jayhawk Winter Classic as they fell 62-41 to Garrett College on Saturday evening.

The Jayhawks trailed 13-0 late into the first quarter before Grace Lundmark (Falconer, NY / Falconer HS) broke the seal with two of her team-high 13 points, putting Jamestown on the board, but the home squad still trailed by 11 after the opening quarter.

The ladies fought back a bit in the second 10-minute stanza, winning that frame 11-10. JCC cut the deficit down to single-digits at one point, a three from Deziree Mount (Hornell, NY / Hornell HS) made the game 21-13 for Garrett late in the half before the Jayhawks entered the break down 25-15.

The Lakers opened up the second half once again filling the bucket and pushing the advantage back to 15 at 31-16.

Jamestown clawed back to within five on a Keturah Stewart (Bethlehem, PA / Freedom HS) three made it a 31-26 ball game.

JCC would get within four late in the third on a bucket from Alexandria Duncan (Cleveland, OH / Cleveland Heights HS), but Garrett scored the next 13 points to put this game on ice.

The loss knocks Jamestown to 2-7 on the season. They look to bounce back on Sunday when they host Butler CCC at 3:00 to close the Jayhawk Winter Classic.
