Jayhawks Defense Plays Strong

The JCC Jayhawks women's basketball team (6-9) hosted the Saints of Mercyhurst NE University (1-8).  The first period saw the Jayhawks sparked by the return of #22 Jada Jackson who scored the first 5 points for the Jayhawks.  The Jayhawks went on a run that was highlighted by a 3 point shot by #30 Natalie Houle (Sherman) as the first period ended with score 14-7 in favor of the Jayhawks.  The second period had the Jayhawks continue to attack the basket and be aggressive on the boards.  Past games had the Jayhawks living by the 3 point shots of #4 Emilee Sperry (Panama) and #30 Natalie Houle (Sherman) to fuel the offense but this game saw more inside plays executed well as the Jayhawks led at the half 32-20.

The third period had the Jayhawks #45 Tayler Morrison (Australia) find open spots in the Saints defense that helped the Jayhawks advance their lead with the third period ending with the Jayhawks holding a comfortable 43-26 lead.  The fourth period saw the Saints narrow the lead to 43-31 with less than 7 minutes to play.  But the Jayhawks offense got hot again, scoring 20 points in a little more than 6 minutes which allowed the Jayhawks to down the Saints 63-43.  The Jayhawks defense also stood out in this game, with aggressive play causing numerous jump ball possession opportunities. 

The Jayhawks were led by #4 Emilee Sperry (Panama) who had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals; #33 Brianne Davis (Bemus Point) had 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 steals;  #11 Hayden Burgeson (Lakewood) had 8 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals;  #45 Tayler Morrison (Australia) had 7 points and 5 rebounds; #20 Sydney Wight (Wellsville) had 6 points and 9 rebounds;  #22 Jada Jackson (Wellsboro) had 5 points and 10 rebounds; #30 Natalie Houle (Sherman) had 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists; and #21 Alexis Hallberg (Bemus Point) had 5 points.
