Two Jayhawks Record Double-Doubles in Loss to Lackawanna

JAMESTOWN - The Jamestown Community College women's basketball team opened up their season in a track meet, falling to Lackawanna College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 111-102 in head coach Ken Ricker's debut.

 

The Jayhawks (0-1) were led by freshman forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) who recorded her first double-double, scoring 20 points while grabbing 18 rebounds (5 offense, 13 defense). Hicks was also a force on the defensive end, racking up 5 blocks. Freshman forward Nadara Odell (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) led JCC in scoring with 30 points of 12-for-19 (63.2 percent) shooting from the field. Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) also had an outstanding collegiate debut, getting her first double-double with 18 points while dishing out 11 assists.

 

Nya Morris led the Falcons in scoring with 40 points with Daeja Cromartie adding 23 points. Cromartie also led the way with rebounds, grabbing 13 boards (8 offense, 5 defense), respectively.

 

JCC came out of the gates firing, going up 9-2 quickly thanks to a three-pointer made by Beehler to get the offense going. Lackawanna cut the deficit to two points at the halfway point of the first quarter, trailing 13-11. The Jayhawks went back to applying the pressure, increasing their lead to 10 points, making it 26-16 after a made layup by Amari Carter (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk). JCC kept the 10-point advantage heading into the second quarter with a score of 30-20.

 

The Jayhawks continued to shoot the ball, getting a 13-point lead with a three-pointer from O'Dell thanks to the assist by Sydney Burk (Jamestown, NY, Southwestern High). The 13-point lead would be JCC's largest lead of the afternoon.

 

The Falcons kept their posie throughout the second quarter, fighting their way back into the game. Lackawanna closed the gap to four points on many occasions to keep things close. Kiana Williams did cut the Jayhawks lead to three with a jump shot but Hicks extended their lead back to five after making apair of free throws to make it 48-43 in favor of JCC.

 

Lackawanna made their adjustments during the break, coming out on a 13-4 run to take a 56-52 lead in the first two minutes of the third frame. Both teams battled in a five minute span, with the Falcons getting a lead as large as five. The Jayhawks kept fighting, tying things up a 64-64 with a layup from Kate Tedquist (Penrose, CO/Canon City HS). The teams went tic for tac in the final three minutes of the quarter with Odell knotting things up at 78-78 heading into the final quarter.

 

The Jayhawks got the lead back with 8:31 left in regulations with Hicks getting the layup to make it 84-83. This would be their final lead of the game. The Falcons went on a 7-0 run to build their lead to 97-86 with 4:51 to go. Lackawanna got their largest of 13-points with under two minutes to play, making it 105-92. JCC battled for the remainder of the game before time expired.

 

JCC went 39-for-89 (43.8 percent) from the floor with Lackawanna shooting 44-for-94 (46.8 percent) from the field. The Jayhawks held the slight edge in rebounding, grabbing 57 to the Falcons' 55. JCC controlled the paint, scoring 62 points with Lackawanna scoring 52 points. 

 

The Jayhawks will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Harcum College tomorrow with the tip at 2 p.m.
