Jayhawks Fall to No. 17 Union County on Sophomore Day

JAMESTOWN - Playing on day two of back-to-back games, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team fell to No. 17 Union County College by the score of 111- 86 on Sophomore Day.

 

The Jayhawks (3-6) were led offensively by freshman guard Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) with a new career-high 30 points on the day. Freshman forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) added another double-double on the season, scoring 11 points while grabbing 11 boards (5 offense, 6 defense).

 

Freshman guard Sydney Burk (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) added 12 points and eight rebounds (4 offense, 4 defense) on the day. Sophomore guard Marisa Schuppenhauer (Jamestown, NY/Maple Grove HS) chipped in with 11 points.

 

For the Owls, Samira Sargent led the way with 34 points with Rissel Rodriguez grabbing 13 rebounds (4 offense, 9 defense), respectively.

 

Coming into the game, the Jayhawks knew that they would be in a battle right from the opening tip. Union County came out strong in the game, scoring 13 unanswered points. JCC had trouble cracking the strong defense of the Owls, hitting the double-digit mark with two minutes left in the quarter. Union County grew their lead to 20 points before the Nance scored four of the last five points to close out the frame.

 

Continuing to battle, the Jayhawks cut the Owls lead to 14 with a basket from Odell and two buckets from Nance, making it 43-29 with just over four minutes until halftime. Union County found their biggest lead of 21 points in the first half with a three-pointer by Dana Hill but freshman guard Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) answered back with a three-pointer of her own. JCC cut the deficit to 17 points heading into intermission as Odell made the backend of her free throws.

 

The Jayhawks did not show quit despite the score, battling all the way to the final whistle. 

 

JCC went 30-for-97 (30.9 percent) from the field with Union County going 46-for-85 (54.1 percent) from the floor). Both took advantage of the other team's mishaps, scoring 30 points each off turnovers. Union County had the edge in second chance points with 19 points to JCC's 15 points.

 

Before the game, sophomore's Marisa Schuppenahuer and Macey Lundmark (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the women's basketball program during their time spent at the institution.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action next Tuesday, March 30th, as they face Niagara County for a fourth time this season in a pivotal game with playoff implications on the line.
