Jayhawks play strong first half

The JCC Jayhawks women's basketball team (0-1) went on the road to face the Lakers of Lakeland Community College (1-0) for their first regular season game of the season.  The Jayhawks took a 5-2 lead before the Lakers took over taking a 15-8 lead.  But the Jayhawks came roaring back tying the game 16-16 with 1 minute left in the first period, and a 3 point shot by #4 Emilee Sperry (Panama) as the first period ended gave the Jayhawks the 19-16 lead.   The second period had the teams going back and forth and with less than 2 and a half minutes remaining the Jayhawks took a 29-24 lead with a #34 Kaleigh Brunswick (South Dayton) 3 pointer.  However, this seemed to wake the Lakers up as they went on a late run to take the lead 30-29 at the half. 

The third period had the Jayhawks quickly take the lead but the momentum was on the Lakers side now as with 6:11 remaining in the period the Lakers were up 40-31 and the period ended with the Lakers in the lead 47-38.  The fourth period had the Lakers pull away, putting the game out of reach as they took a 10 point lead with 8 minutes remaining as they Lakers downed the Jayhawks 69-53.  The Jayhawks were led by #4 Emilee Sperry (Panama) who scored a double double with 18 points and 11 rebounds; #11 Hayden Burgeson (Lakewood) had 8 points and 4 rebounds; #34 Kaleigh Brunswick (South Dayton) had 8 points and 3 rebounds; #30 Natalie Houle 's (Sherman) had 6 points and 3 rebounds; and #22 Jada Jackson (Wellsboro) had 5 points and 3 assists.
