Jayhawks Battle Hard But Fall To The Seahawks

ROCHESTER - In another tough battle, the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team fell to Cecil College by a score of 66-60 at the Murph Shapiro Classic hosted by Monroe Community College Sunday afternoon.

 

The Jayhawks (2-4) were led by sophomore forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) and freshman guard Jared Martin (Norwich, CT/Springfield Commonwealth Academy) who had 15 points each with sophomore guard Chad Chambers (Calera, AL/Calera HS) adding 10 points. On the glass, sophomore guard/forward Josiah Ransom (Orange Park, FL/Helena HS) had eight rebounds (2 offense, 6 defense) with sophomore guard Brian Fajardo (Bronx, NY/Aeci Charter HS) and Gray each adding seven rebounds.

 

JCC had a hill to climb late in the first half, down 19-8 with just over five minutes until the break. The Jayhawks put together a 9-1 run to make it 20-18 with over two minutes to go in the half. The run got off and running with a pair of baskets from Martin and a three-pointer from Chambers.

 

The Jayhawks got their first lead of the game with a minute to go with a three-pointer from Gray off the feed from Chambers to make it 23-22. After a pair of free throws from the Seahawks, Gray knocked down another three ball to retake the lead. To end the half, Cecil made a three-pointer of their own to have the 27-26 edge at the break.

 

JCC went blow-for-blow with Cecil, keeping it within a two possession game in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Seahawks would build a lead of no greater than seven on a few occasions but the Jayhawks continued to battle.

 

Down 49-42 with under 10 minutes left in regulation, the Jayhawks scored six unanswered points to make it 49-48 at the 8:14 mark.

 

The Seahawks did just enough to maintain the lead and pushed their lead to 11 points with just over a minute left in regulation.

 

The Jayhawks went 22-for-62 (42.3 percent) from the floor while the Seahawks went 24-for-61 (39.3 percent). JCC controlled the glass with 41 rebounds to Cecil's 33.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Wednesday, November 16th, as they open Region 3 play at Erie Community College at 7:30 p.m.
