Jayhawks Place Fourth At Nationals

CHAUTAUQUA – To close out the 2023 NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Nationals Championships, the Jamestown Community College men's golf team held strong to finish fourth in the country out of the 11 qualifying teams.

 

The Jayhawks shots their lowest round of the tournament with a 309 for a final score of 1,264. JCC defeated Region 3 for Onondaga Community College, the 2023 NJCAA Region 3 Champions, by 26 strokes who finished sixth at nationals.

 

JCC was led by Anthony Gullo (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) who shot a score of 75 for a total of 311 to finish tied for 21st place. Austyn Cummings (Warren, PA/Warren Area HS) shot one of his best rounds of the season, coming in with a 76.

 

Brady Fye (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern High) shot his third round of 77, coming in with a total of 310 and tied for 19th. Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) shot an 81 for a total of 311, tying him with teammate Anthony Gullo for 21st place. Noah Adams (Mayville, NY/Chautauqua Lake Central) also shot an 81 on the afternoon for his best score of the week.

 

In the team standings, Sandhills Community College claimed the national championship once again with a total of 1,147, a new tournament record beating out Monroe Community College during the 2006 championships where they shot a 1,168. Georgia Military College was runners-up, shooting a 1,188 and the College of DuPage in third with a total of 1,252.

 

Individually, Ben Read of Sandhills CC shot a 277, setting a new tournament record that was held by Chris Malec of Monroe Community College back in 2009 who shot a 281. Read's teammate Alex Martin finished second with a 286 with Nick Johnson of Georgia Military College shooting a 288. Logan Hay of Sandhills CC and Troy Loughry of Butler County Community College round out the top-five with scores of 293 and 294, respectively.

 

Sandhills CC head coach Gus Ulrich of Sandhills Community College was named the Men's Golf Coach of the Tournament while Liam Kosior of Butler County Community College was named the Men's Golf Sportsmanship Award winner.

 

On the women's side, Oxford College of Emory University was named the first-ever NJCAA Division III Women's Golf National Champion, posting a score of 1,546. RCSJ-Gloucester was runner-up, posting a score of 1,685.

 

Individually, Sandhills CC held onto the top-three spots with Trinity Ahing earning medalist honors with a score of 300 while teammates Ava Ray and Scotty Foley had totals of 304 and 311. Ellia Soydara of Minnesota Community & Technical College earned a fourth-place finish with a total of 322 while Rayne Yelinko of County College of Morris finished with a 345 to round out the top-five.

 

Oxford College of Emory University Martin Maher was named the Women's Golf Coach of the Tournament while McCarthy Lang of Niagara County Community College was named the Women's Golf Sportmanship Award winner.
