Baseball Battles Tooth And Nail With No. 5 Niagara County CC In Season Finale

JAMESTOWN – In their regular season finale Tuesday afternoon at Diehtrick Park, the Jamestown Community College battled against No. 5 Niagara County Community College but came up short in the effort.

 

The Jayhawks (11-29, 9-19 Region 3 West) made a slight comeback in game one where they trailed 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh where they scored three runs in the late push. In game two, JCC dropped a 6-1 decision.

 

Game 1: No. 5 Niagara County Community College 9 – Jamestown Community College 5

The Jayhawks' offense was led by shortstop Nate Johnson (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) with two hits with second baseman Riley Piazza (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) adding two RBIs.

 

After trialing 4-0 in the bottom of the third, JCC was able to scratch across a pair of runs. Piazza hit a two-run single to score Johnson and third baseman Chris Navarro (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS).

 

The Thunderwolves added one more run in the fourth and four more runs in the sixth. The Jayhawks made a late push in the seventh inning, scoring three runs. Designated hitter Minjong Seong (Hanam-Si, South Korea/Baemyeong HS) came across in a throwing error. The second run came by a sac fly by catcher Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago HS) to score Navarro. The team's final run came as centerfielder Timothy Johnson (San Tan Valley, AZ/Comb HS) grounded out to score N. Johnson.

 

Walt Rybczynski (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis HS) earned the loss on the mound, going three and one-third inning surrendering four earned runs on four hits. Ethan Phillips (East Durham, NY/Cairo-Durham HS) came in for relief, going two and one-third inning giving up two earned runs on five hits. Eddie Bartoli (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown HS) closed the game out with a clean slate.

 

Game 2: No. 5 Niagara County Community College 6 – Jamestown Community College 1

In the backend of the doubleheader, the Jayhawks got two hits in the game with Hennessy and Piazza each tallying a hit.

 

JCC's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth where they were trailing 2-0 with Piazza hitting a one-run single to bring in Hennessy.

 

Timothy Beimel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys HS) earned the loss on the mound, going four and one-third inning surrendering four earned runs on seven hits. N. Johnson came in the close the game out, giving up one earned run on five hits while striking out five batters.
