Jayhawks Knock-Off No. 1 Genesee CC In Overtime Thriller

JAMESTOWN – The Physical Education Complex was the place to be Tuesday evening, as the Jamestown Community College knocked-off the No. 1 Genesee Community College in overtime by a score of 93-83.

 

The Jayhawks (2-2) had five scorers in double-digits with freshman guard Jared Martin (Norwich, CT/Springfield Commonwealth Academy) leading the way with 17 points while sophomore forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) adding 14 points. Sophomore guard Elgin Oliver (Pittsburgh, PA/Gateway Senior HS) had a solid game all-around, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards (3 offense, 7 defense).

 

JCC started to find their rhythm late in the first half of action, going on a 12-2 run to get them a lead of 30-20 with 2:44 remaining until intermission. Freshman guard Robert McLarney (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca HS) jump-started the run, knocking down a three-pointer off the assist from sophomore guard Chad Chambers (Calera, AL/Calera HS). After a made basket from sophomore guard/forward Josiah Ransom (Orange Park, FL/Helena HS), Chambers got in on the action with back-to-back layups.

 

The Cougars, who were just name the No. 1 team in Division III on Monday, tried to close the gap but the Jayhawks took a 36-28 lead into the break.

 

Opening up the second half, JCC pushed their lead to 14 as freshman forward Josiah Diaz (Pawtucket, RI/Springfield Commonwealth Academy) converted his and-one opportunity to make it 48-34 in favor of the Jayhawks.

 

GCC showed why they were the best team in Division III, as they overcame the deficit by going on a 17-2 run to take a 51-50 with 11:26 left in regulation. Neither team was able to get more than a two-possession advantage and take over the game.

 

In the overtime period, sophomore guard/forward Bam Toure (Jamaica, NY/St. Johns Prep) came ready to play, throwing down an emphatic two-handed jam off the steal and assist from Chambers to set the tone.

 

The Jayhawks rode that momentum in overtime as they closed the game out on a 9-3 run and put the game away.

 

JCC went 35-for-90 (38.9 percent) from the field while GCC went 33-for-77 (42.9 percent) from the floor. The Jayhawks held the advantage in rebounding, grabbing 64 boards to the Cougars' 50.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday, November 12th, as they take on No. 3 Sullivan County Community College at the Murph Shapiro Classic hosted by Monroe Community College. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
