Jayhawks Hold-Off Catamounts

JAMESTOWN – On day two of the Jim Riggs Classic, the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team was able to hold off WVU Potomac State with a 70-67 win Sunday evening.

 

The Jayhawks (5-7) were led offensively by freshman Jared Martin (Norwich, CT/Springfield Commonwealth Academy) with 18 points while guard Chad Chambers (Calera, AL/Calera HS) and Elgin Oliver (Pittsburgh, PA/Gateway Senior HS) added 14 and 10 points respectively. Martin also got it done on the glass, grabbing nine rebounds (3 offense, 6 defense).

 

In the early minutes of the first half, JCC found themselves in a 12-3 deficit but slowly clawed themselves back into the game. The Jayhawks responded by going on a 13-0 run which was capped off by a three-pointer from Martin off the feed from Oliver and later a three-pointer from Chambers to make it 16-12.

 

The teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the half before JCC scored seven unanswered as time was expiring which included five points from Chambers to make it 28-22.

 

Starting the second half, the Jayhawks continued to fire on all cylinders, gaining a lead by as many as 21. JCC used a 17-4 run to gain the advantage where Martin took over, scoring 13 points including three three-pointer in that stretch.

 

The Catamounts did not go away quietly, though, going on an 18-5 run to close the game but the Jayhawks were able to close it out.

 

JCC went 27-for-70 (38.6 percent) from the field with WVU Potomac State going 21-for-54 (38.9 percent) from the floor. The Jayhawks had the advantage on the glass, grabbing 47 rebounds to the Catamounts' 36 rebounds.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Wednesday, December 7th, as they host No. 4 Niagara County Community College at 7:30 p.m.
