Women's Basketball Falls To Niagara County In Region 3 Championship Thriller

SANBORN – It was a thrilling NJCAA Region 3 Championship from tip to final buzzer but in the end, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team fell to host Niagara County Community College by a score of 65-60 Sunday afternoon.

 

The Jayhawks (15-10) were led by D'Auzhanay Harden (Erie, PA/Erie HS) with 15 points while Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights), Grace Lundmark (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS), and Chyann Kelly (Bailey, CO/Platte Canyon HS) each chipped in with nine points. Hicks led the way on the glass with 14 rebounds (3 offense, 11 defense) with Zalika Stevens (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Thornlea Secondary School) adding 10 boards (2 offense, 8 defense).

 

JCC came out firing in the first quarter of action, outscoring the Thunderwovles 14-5 after the first quarter of action. Harden led the way with four points with Hicks and Hayley Dawson (Papamoa, New Zealand/Tauranga Girl's College) scoring three points each.

 

N-Trip quickly flipped the script in the second quarter, scoring 20 points to the Jayhawks' 11 as the teams were all knotted up at 25-25 going into the break.

 

The team kept battling for much of the third quarter, going back and forth with neither gaining much of an advantage. The Jayhawks did score five unanswered to take a 41-36 lead with 2:24 left in the quarter. The Thunderwolves quickly got back the momentum to close the quarter out on a 13-2 run, taking a 49-43 lead into the final quarter of regulation.

 

With just a two-possession game with 10 minutes left in the game, it was far from over. JCC opened the final frame going on a 12-5 run capped off by a three-pointer by Kelly to make it 55-54 at the 5:26 mark.

 

The teams continued to trade baskets before N-Trip took their final lead of the game with just under two minutes left to hold onto win.

 

The Jayhawks went 23-for-59 (39 percent) from the floor with the Thunderwolves going 26-for-77 (33.8 percent) from the field. N-Trip held the advantage on the glass, grabbing 52 rebounds to JCC's 40.

 

After the game, Harden and Hicks were recognized by Region 3 as they were named to the NJCAA Region 3 All-Tournament Team.
