Jayhawks Lose Heartbreaker On Sophomore Day

JAMESTOWN  - In their regular-season finale, the Jamestown Community College men's basketball played in another tightly contested game against Monroe Community College but ultimately fell by a score of 51-50 Saturday afternoon.

 

The Jayhawks (7-20, 1-8 Region 3) were led by sophomore Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) with 16 points with sophomore guard Elgin Oliver (Pittsburgh, PA/Gateway Senior HS) adding 14 points. Sophomore forward Gonzalo Luque (Madrid, Spain/Instituto Ortega y Gasset) led the team on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds (2 offense, 8 defense).

 

Through the first nine minutes of action, neither team was able to get much of an advantage with the game at 12-11 in favor of JCC. The Jayhawks scored seven points unanswered with four points from freshman forward Josiah Diaz (Pawtucket, RI/Springfield Commonwealth Academy) and the other three from Oliver to take a 19-11 lead.

 

Down 22-17 with 5:38 before halftime, MCC was able to end the half on a 10-3 run to take a 27-25 lead into the break.

 

In the second half, the Jayhawks could not get more than a two-possession lead to help pull away from the Tribunes. MCC kept battling and took the 51-48 lead with just over a minute of regulation. JCC had one final look to get the win but their shot fell short.

 

The Jayhawks went 21-for-63 (33.3 percent) from the floor with the Tribunes going 20-for-60 (33.3 percent) from the field. JCC held the slight advantage on the glass, grabbing 46 rebounds to MCC's 43 rebounds.

 

Prior to the game, the Jayhawks recognized sophomores Brian Fajardo (Bronx. NY/Aeci Charter HS), Josiah Ransom (Birmingham, AL/Heena HS), Chad Chambers (Calera, AL/Calera HS), Santiago Manero (Galicia, Spain), Gray, Oliver, and Luque for their contributions to the program during their time with the team.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action next Saturday, February 25th, as they take on Niagara County Community College in the NJCAA Region 3 Division II Championship Semifinals. Game time to be determined.
