Jayhawks Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to 4-Year Program Villa Maria

JAMESTOWN, NY - A packed house on WHITEOUT night witnessed the game of the year, but the ending was a tough pill to swallow for Jamestown Community College as the Jayhawks lost at the buzzer to Villa Maria, 88-87.

This game didn't start off looking like it was going to be a nail-biter.

Villa Maria jumped out to an 11-5 lead thanks mostly to Juston Johnson scoring at will early. He netted six of his team-high 26 in the opening five minutes.

JCC would get the deficit down to three at 13-10 after a three from Jalyn Moorehead, who poured in 14 for the Jayhawks.

The Vikings stretched the lead back out to nine with a couple of contest jump shots before Jamestown answered with a Jhamien Smith layup. Smith kept JCC in the game early, scoring a game-high 28 on the night.

JCC started to scrap back from there, with Samad Bailey finding his rhythm, knocking down a mid-range jumper to bring JCC within a pair.

The see-saw battle lasted right up to the break, with Villa leading 46-37 to close the first half.

Jamestown would fall behind by as much as 11 early in the second stanza after another three from Johnson, but that's when the Jayhawks started to chip away.

The deficit was down to four at 53-49 after a pair of free throws from Smith.

The Jayhawks took their first lead at 57-55 on the back of a three from Moorehead.

The lead would change hands six times over the next 10 minutes, with both teams showing grit and determination.

JCC looked to have seized control on a three from Oscar Mance, who finished with 19, and then Smith hit a pair of free throws to make it 85-79 Jamestown with under two minutes to play.

Villa clawed back in thanks to some tough play by Nolan Sherpard.

It was a two-point game with six seconds on the clock and a Vikings inbounds.

Juston Johnson drove the length of the court and found James Damario in the corner, who buried the three at the buzzer to win it, 88-87.

JCC doesn't have long to stew about this heartbreaker as they are back on the court in Niagara on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
