Valiant Effort Falls Short Against No. 20 Niagara County CC

JAMESTOWN - In a much anticipated game against No. 20 Niagara County Community College Wednesday evening, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team gave a valiant effort but fell short by a score of 56-53.

 

The Jayhawks (13-9, 5-3 Region 3) were led by sophomore forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) with 21 points and 16 rebounds (4 offense, 12 defense) with sophomore guard D'Auzhanay Harden (Erie, PA/Erie HS) adding 15 points. Freshman forward Grace Lundmark (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) added 10 rebounds (1 offense, 9 defense) to go along with eight points.

 

JCC came out firing, taking a 14-3 lead in the first five minutes of the first quarter. Hicks led the quick start with six points with Lundmark adding four points. The Thunderwolves responded in the second quarter, outsourcing the Jayhawks 19-11 to take a 32-27 lead into the break.

 

Down by two possessions going into the final frame of regulation, JCC was able to retake the lead with under eight minutes to play by going up 44-43. The teams traded blows over the next five minutes with neither team gaining an advantage. N-Trip was able to break the 51-51 tie with a three-pointer by Jenna Slader to give them the 54-51 lead with over one minute of action to go.

 

The Jayhawks had a look in the final seconds but came up short.

 

JCC went 23-for-72 (31.9 percent) from the field with N-Trip going 20-for-65 (30.8 percent) from the floor. The Jayhawks held the slight advantage in the paint, outscoring the Thunderwolves 26-22.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday, February 18th, for their regular-season finale against Monroe Community College starting at 1 p.m.
