JCC Men's Swimming and Diving Earn a Win at Home WNYAC Meet

JAMESTOWN, NY - A slew of newcomers helped the Jamestown Community College men's swimming and diving team bring home a win, 1-2 overall, in the home WNYAC meet on Wednesday.

The men took the water for the first time in the 200 freestyle, where Steven Zentz claimed a second-place finish with a 2:09:52. Lukas Baer (Jamestown, NY / Maple Grove Central) took eighth in his first shot at the event.

"It was great to see our Men and Women go out and race and be competitive. Swimming the longer races is something that we haven't done this year yet, and I thought the kids responded great to it. Especially as most have never competed in those events," said head coach Todd Conklin.

In the men's 50-yard freestyle, Jamestown took four of the top nine spots. Newcomers Toby Gifford (Frewsburg, NY / Frewsburg HS) (second), Colton Schuman (Allegany, NY / Allegany-Limestone HS) (seventh), and Randall Hall II (Olean, NY / Olean HS) (ninth), were joined by Rinat Kalimullin (Kazan, Russia / Boarding Lyceum NO. 7), who finished fifth.

"We have added a few new swimmers on each side over the past few weeks, and to see them respond was great. Toby Gifford jumped right in and made some National cuts as well as Hayley Dawson. We have made a lot of cuts for the National meet already, and we have some swimmers right on the cusp. Really happy with where we are at as we get ready for our mid-season meet at Cortland, where we will have a little rest and look for a great performance before the first half wraps up," added Conklin.

It was another great group showing the 100 free, with Gifford coming home third, Baer seventh, and Hall tenth.

Steve Zentz (Dunkirk, NY / Dunkirk HS) would notch a second-place finish in the 500-yard free.

Switching to the IMs, Jamestown's Gifford earned fifth, Kalimullin sixth, Schuman ninth, and Hall tenth.

Lastly, was the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Jamestown's group of Zents, Baer, Kalimullin, and Schuman clocked in a second-place finish.

Next up for the Jayhawks is a trip to Cortland for the Snowflake Invitational December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
