Hicks' Double-Double Pushes Jayhawks Past BC3

JAMESTOWN - Coming off the long holiday break, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team got the win over Butler County Community College by a score of 52-45 Wednesday evening.

 

The Jayhawks (6-7) were led by sophomore forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) with a double-double, grabbing 20 rebounds (6 offense, 14 defense) and 11 blocks. Freshman forward Grace Lundmark (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) led JCC in scoring with 16 points with sophomore guard/forward Zalika Stevens (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Thornlea Secondary School) adding 14 points.

 

After trailing 14-11 after a quarter of action, JCC kept battling well into the second quarter as they got their first lead of the game at the 4:54 mark with a basket from Stevens off the feed from freshman guard Chyann Kelly (Bailey, CO/Platte Canyon HS) to make it 19-17. Lundmark added another basket to make it 21-17 with over three minutes until the break. Five straight points from the Pioneers gave them the 22-21 lead heading into halftime.

 

Coming out of the break, BC3 scored the first seven points to give them the 29-21 lead. Keeping their poise, the Jayhawks got the game back to a one-possession game with a basket from freshman guard Angelique Palacio (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) and then tied the game with a layup from Stevens with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

 

The Jayhawks took the lead back over in the final seconds of the third quarter as Hicks found Lundmark for the basket, taking the 39-37 lead into the final frame.

 

Carrying over their momentum in the fourth quarter, the Jayhawks scored the first six points with four coming from Stevens to make it 45-37 and maintained the lead to close the game out.

 

The Jayhawks went 21-for-74 (28.4 percent) from the field with the Pioneers going 17-for-65 (26.2 percent) from the floor. JCC held the slight edge on the glass, grabbing 56 rebounds to BC3's 53 rebounds.

 

JCC will be back in action on Wednesday, January 18th, as they travel to Villa Maria College for a 6 p.m. tip.
