Jayhawks Downed By The Tribunes

JAMESTOWN – Playing in their final game of the fall semester, the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team fell to Monroe Community College by a score of 84-76 Wednesday evening.

The Jayhawks (6-9, 1-2 Region 3) were led offensively by freshman guard Jared Martin (Norwich, CT/Springfield Commonwealth Academy) with 20 points while sophomore guard/forward Josiah Ransom (Birmingham, AL/Helena HS) added 15 points. Sophomore forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) led the team in rebounds with nine (3 offense, 9 defense) while Martin came away with six steals and three blocks.

The Tribunes jumped out to an early 25-17 lead halfway through the first but JCC slowly clawed their way back into the game. The Jayhawks went on a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead back to two possessions and were able to build upon it.

Keeping the game within reach, sophomore forward Santiago Manero (Galicia, Spain) knocked-down a three-pointer followed up by baskets from Martin and sophomore guard Elgin Oliver (Pittsburgh, PA/Gateway Senior HS) to give JCC the 32-31 advantage with just over three minutes until the break. MCC was able to get a three-pointer back but seven unanswered by the Jayhawks gave them the 40-34 lead.

MCC kept pushing the tempo to make it 42-39 with seconds remaining but an acrobatic rebound and layup from Manero gave JCC the 44-39 lead going into the break.

Both teams came out battling in the second half, with Monroe getting the edge. Going on a 14-6 run, the Tribunes were able to retake the lead at the 15:48 mark, up 53-52.

The Tribunes were able to maintain their lead though the Jayhawks cut the deficit to one possession on multiple occasions.

The Jayhawks went 25-for-58 (43.1 percent) from the field with the Tribunes going 28-for-65 (43.1 percent) from the floor. JCC held the advantage on the glass, grabbing 46 rebounds to MCC's 34.

JCC will be off for the holiday break and will return to action on January 11th as they host Butler County Community College for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
