Podium Finish Caps Off Day One Of Nationals

BUFFALO - It was a light day for the Jamestown Community College women's swimming & diving team, only competing in six events after day one of the 2023 NJCAA Swimming & Diving National Championships at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College.

"We are ontrack as we start the week off," said head coach Todd Conklin, whose team currently sits in sixth place. "The ones who swam today did a phenomenal job and it was good to cap the night off with a podium finish in the relay."

The Jayhawks had one podium finish on the night as the 800 yard freestyle relay team of Hannah Eckert (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS), Stacey Blackler (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale HS), Kylee Hennessy (Warren, PA/Warren Area HS), and Lindsey Spitz (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) finish sixth with a time of 9:42.06.

Individually, Spitz started the day with a swim of 33.80 in the 50 yard breaststroke in the prelims. Spitz was able to come out stronger in the finals, finishing with a time of 32.96 to finish 11th. Spitz also competed in the 200 yard IM where she posted a time of 2:31.90 in the prelims and shaved nearly four seconds off that time in the finals to place 14th.

Eckert competed in the 50 yard freestyle where she posted a time of 28.40 in the prelims and bested it with a time of 27.58 in the finals to place 14th.

"Lindsey had a great first day," Conklin said. "It was great to see her get off to a fast start. Hannah and Stacey also had great first swims in their first national championship."

JCC accumulated 38 points on day one, sitting 11 points behind Region 3 foe Monroe Community College.

The Jayhawks will be back in the pool tomorrow with prelims starting at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.
