Yuchnitz Crowned National Champion; Jayhawks in Fourth After Day One at Nationals

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – It has been a monumental day for the Jamestown Community College women's swimming team, as sophomore Karianne Yuchnitz (Panama, NY/Panama Central) has become the first national champion in program history.

 

In the preliminary round, Yuchnitz set a new school record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.94, beating out Sydney Weatherspoon of Division I Indian Rivers State College by just over half a second.. This was the third time Yuchnitz has set a new mark in the event, giving her the one seed going into the championship round.

 

In the championship round, Yuchnitz once again set a new school record in the 50 yard freestyle, posting a time of 23.87 beating out Weatherspoon who posted a time of 24.21.

 

As a team, the Jayhawks are currently in fourth place with 66 team points.

 

The rest of the Jayhawks had an outstanding day one at the 2021 National Junior College Athletic Association, posting personal best in their respective events.

 

Freshman Lillian Baer (Jamestown, NY/Maple Grove HS) posted a new personal best in the preliminary round of the 50 yard breaststroke with a time of 39.77. Baer finished the night in 11th-place with a time of 39.35 in the championship round. Baer's previous time was 40.27 posted at the beginning of the season going into today's events.

 

Freshman Tia Moppert (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda Central) finished with a time of 2:31.57 in the preliminary round. In the championship round, Moppert posted a time of 2:30.70 to finish 12th. Fellow teammate Jade Vidas (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Parktown HS for Girls) continues to improve in the 200 yard IM, posting a time of 2:31.57. Vidas posted a time of 2:34.50 in the championship round, finishing in 14th place.

 

Freshman Anna Burt (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) also had a career day in the pool, posting a time of 28.44 in the 50 yard freestyle, finishing 17th. Fellow Jayhawk Alyssa Hanesworth (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) also posted a personal best in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 31.60, finishing 20th.

 

Freshman Megan Stang (Perrysburg, NY/Gowanda Central) competed in the 1000 yard freestyle, posting a time of 13:45.22 and placing fifth.

 

The Jayhawks finished the night in the 800 yard freestyle relay with the team of Vidas, Stang, Baer, and Moppert. The team posted a time of 9:21.61 for a fifth-place finish.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in the pool tomorrow for day two of the 2021 NJCAA Swimming & Diving National Championships with session three starting at 9:30 a.m.
