Jayhawks Down Monroe CC On Sophomore Day; Hicks Eclipses 1,000 Career Rebounds

JAMESTOWN - In their regular-season finale, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball took care of Monroe Community College by a score of 62-56 Saturday afternoon.

 

The Jayhawks (14-9, 6-3 Region 3) were led by sophomore forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) with 25 points and 17 rebounds (7 offense, 10 defense) which helped Hicks eclipse the 1,000 career rebounds mark. Freshman Chyann Kelly (Bailey, CO/Platte Canyon HS) added 13 points in the effort to go along with five assists.

 

Taking the 34-26 lead into the break, JCC had to keep pushing the issue if they wanted to close the regular season out with a win. In the third quarter, Hicks scored six points with freshman guard Angelique Palacio (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) adding five points to make it 54-43 going into the final frame.

 

MCC played with a sense of urgency in the final quarter, outscoring JCC 13-8. The Tribunes made it a five-point game with over two minutes to go in regulation but a late layup by Kelly made it a seven-point game to help put it away.

 

The Jayhawks went 28-for-75 (37.3 percent) from the floor with the Tribunes going 20-for-63 (31.7 percent) from the floor. JCC controlled the paint, scoring 44 points to MCC's 28 points.

 

At halftime of the game, the team recognized their sophomores in Zalika Stevens (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/ Thornlea Secondary School), D'Auzhanay Harden (Erie, PA/Erie HS), Nonjabulo Mathebula (Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa/St. Mary's Diocesan School for Girls), and Hicks for their contributions to the program during their time with the team.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action next Saturday, February 25th, as they take on Monroe Community College in the NJCAA Region 3 Division II Championship Semifinals. Game time to be determined.
