Courageous Effort Falls Short Against No. 2 Niagara County CC

JAMESTOWN - In a highly contested game against No. 2 Niagara County Community College Wednesday evening, the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team gave a courageous effort but fell short by a score of 69-64.

The Jayhawks (7-19, 1-7 Region 3) had four players in double figures with sophomore forward Gonzalo Luque (Madrid, Spain/Instituto Ortega y Gasset) led the way with 19 points and 17 rebounds (2 offense, 15 defense) while sophomore/forward Josiah Ransom (Birmingham, AL/Helena HS) had 11 points off the bench. Sophomores Elgin Oliver (Pittsburgh, PA/Gateway Senior HS) and Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) added 10 points each.

JCC came out on fire, opening the game on a 10-2 run that was capped off by a three-pointer by Gray off the feed from Nkosinathi Dlamini (Durban, South Africa/St. Charles College). The run was started by a three-pointer from Oliver to set the tone.

N-Trip battled back from the deficit to take the 17-16 lead. JCC had a response of their own, going on a 12-2 run over a three minute span to go up 28-19. In the run, Dlamini and Ransom both knocked-down three-pointers with Luque scoring the other six points.

The Thunderwolves retook the lead with four minutes in the half to take a 33-30 lead into the break.

Coming out of the break, the Jayhawks continued to grind, getting the 36-35 lead just minutes into the action. N-Trip would quickly get the lead back, going on a 12-0 run.

With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, the Jayhawks kept chipping away, cutting it to 67-64 with the layup from freshman guard Jalyn Moorehead (Rochester, NY/Southerland HS) with 40 seconds left in the game. Needing to foul, JCC did just that with N-Trip was able to convert their free throws to put the game out of reach.

The Jayhawks went 24-for-60 (40 percent) from the floor with the Thunderwolves going 28-for-75 (37.3 percent) from the field.

JCC will be back in action this Saturday, February 18th, for their regular-season finale against Monroe Community College starting at 1 p.m.
