Jayhawks Walk-Off Game One; Shutout TC3 In Game Two

SAINT BONAVENTURE - It was a cold afternoon to say the least the Jamestown Community College baseball team was able to battle the elements to halt an 11-game skid, picking up a pair of wins Tompkins Cortland Community College Thursday afternoon at St. Bonaventure University.

 

The Jayhawks (3-11, 2-2 Region 3) came from behind to win in walk-off fashion 11-10 in game one then proceeded to win 10-0 in game two of the double header.

 

Game 1: Jamestown Community College 11 - Tompkins Cortland Community College 10

JCC was led offensively by second baseman Riley Piazza (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) who went three-for-four at the plate with four players each collecting two hits. Catcher Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago HS) had a solid game, hitting a double and a triple while driving in a pair of runs. Third baseman Lucas Marsh (Salamanca, NY/Ellicottville HS) drove in three runs.

 

After falling down 2-0 in the first, the Jayhawks got on the board with a triple from Hennessy to score shortstop Nate Johnson (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern High). The Jayhawks took the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs to make it 5-2. Marsh hit a two-run single, driving in Piazza and designated hitter Tanner Potter (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg HS). Right fielder Hayden Hoag (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca HS) scored on a sac fly by N. Johnson with Marsh scoring the last run of the spurt thanks to a single from centerfielder Timothy Johnson (San Tan Valley, AZ/Comb HS).

 

The Panthers added a run in the top of the third with JCC answering in the bottom of the inning with a double by Piazza to drive home Potter.

 

In the fourth, TC3 took back the lead by scoring five runs to make it 8-7. JCC did tie it back up in the bottom of the inning as T. Johnson scored on a fielder's choice.

 

TC3 once again took the lead in the fifth before a single by Marsh drove home Potter and a double by Hennessy driving home Marsh to make it 9-9 going into the sixth.

 

In the sixth, the Panthers scored a run but a fielder's choice by left fielder Timothy Beimel (St. Marys, PA/St Marys HS) was able to drive home Hennessy.

 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Jayhawks won in walk-off fashion as pinch runner Chris Navarro (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) scored on an error from the Panther's first baseman to get the win.

 

Pitcher De'Sean Rogers (Winter Haven, FL/Winter Haven HS) started the game, going three and one-third innings, surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits while striking out four batters. Ethan Phillips (East Durham, NY/Cairo-Durham HS) got the win on the mound in relief work, going three and two-third innings, giving up four hits while striking out five batters.

 

Game 2: Jamestown Community College 10 - Tompkins Cortland Community College 0

The Jayhawks carried over the momentum into the second half of the doubleheader as N. Johnson went three-for-four with a double and three RBIs while first baseman Kenny Nickson III (Erie, PA/Erie HS) and Beimel each getting a pair of hits, combining for four doubles.

 

After two scoreless innings of play, JCC got on the board with a sac fly from Hennessy to score N. Johnson.

 

The Jayhawks opened the game up in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs to make it an 8-0 ball game. Highlighting the inning was doubles by Beimel, N. Johnson, and Nickson III.

 

JCC closed the game out in the fifth inning to implement the 10-run rule where catcher Kameron Melendez (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) drove home Beimel on a double and N. Johnson returned the favor by driving home Melendez to get the win.

 

Potter went the distance on the mound, fanning four hits while striking out four batters.

 

The Jayhawks will next be in action next Tuesday, April 4th, as they host Onondaga Community College at 1 p.m. This weekend's doubleheader against Tompkins Cortland Community College has been postponed with forecasted inclement weather.
