Potts & Johnson Place At NYS Intercollegiate Open

ROCHESTER - Going against some of the best that New York State has to offer, the Jamestown Community College wrestling team competed at the NYS Intercollegiate Open Saturday at RIT.

 

Brock Johnson (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) was the top placer for the Jayhawks, placing fifth in the 197 pound weight class. Luke Potts (Pittsburgh, PA/West Allegheny HS) also placed for JCC, placing sixth in the 141 pound weight class.

 

After falling to Brayden Vandenberg of Niagara Falls by a 12-5 decision, Johnson got back in the win column with a 13-1 major decision win over Chris Bold of Cortland State. Moving on in the consolation bracket, Johnson was up-ended by Zachery Fultz of Merchant Marine Academy by an 8-1 decision.

 

In the fifth place match, Johnson was able to get the fall over Keaton Renfrew of Alfred State, needing 1:51 to do so.

 

In his first match of the day, Potts had a grinder of a match but ultimately fell to Bill Piatti of Oswego State by a 3-1 sudden victory-1. In the consolation round, Potts got the 8-1 decision win over Wayne Earl of Oswego State and then picked up the fall over Matt Lawrence of RIT, needing 6:45 to do so.

 

Moving onto the fourth round in the consolation bracket, Potts got the 12-3 major decision win over Jaden Friel of SUNY Brockport and then went onto get the fall over Vincent Santilli of Cortland State, needing 6:32 to secure the win.

 

In the consolation semifinals match, Potts fell to Andy Lucinski from University at Buffalo via fall. In the fifth place match, Potts matched out on the afternoon, giving Noah Orser the win and Potts the sixth place finish.

 

Alex Christy (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia HS) picked up one win on the day in the 184 pound weight class.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday, January 28th, as they host Niagara County Community College at 7 p.m.
