Jayhawks Overtime Thriller

Jayhawks Overtime Thriller

The JCC Jayhawks men's basketball team (16-12) hosted the Cougars of Genesee Community College (17-10).  Before the game, JCC honored the sophomore athletes which included #4 Mike Bush (Harlem), #10 Derek Ice (Bronx), #20 Tanner Dahl (Westfield), #21 Brandon Banna, #32 Brandon Kemp (Brooklyn), and #34 Jean Toussaint.  From the time the game began until the final buzzer sounded, both teams played physical basketball.  The action and impact underneath the boards had the feel of professional football.  Both teams played tough inside defense that limited inside plays, all avenues to the basket were filled in the blink of an eye, and if you ventured inside the paint hoping for an easy layup, you were in for a rude awakening.  The only success both teams found was from the outside.  At half time, the score was close with the Jayhawks holding a narrow 36-34 lead.  The second half somehow managed to have even stingier defenses from both teams.  Both offenses played well but they matched up so evenly, there was no easy openings, there was no creating a mismatch, just two teams hoping the other would make a mistake…but neither did and the second half ended in a 66-66 tie.  With less than 10 seconds left in overtime and down 70-71, Brandon Kemp hit a shot that sent everyone on their feet cheering and the Jayhawks coaches and players jumping with jubilation as the seconds ticked down to 72-71 Jayhawks victory.

The Jayhawks were led by #4 Mike Bush (Harlem) who had 13 points and 6 assists; #22 Dashawn Branch had 13 points (including going 3-4 from 3 point land); #34 Jean Toussaint had a double double consisting of 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks; #10 Derek Ice (Bronx) had 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists; #12 Tyler Moffe had 11 points; and #32 Brandon Kemp (Brooklyn) had 8 points and 11 rebounds.
