JCC Top-50 Athletes

1. Kay Beaver - Volleyball/Basketball/Softball - 1995-97

Kay Beaver was the best setter the women’s volleyball team ever had, which is why she was named an NJCAA first-team Division III All-American for the 1996 season. The Lady Jayhawks appeared at the national tournament in each of Beaver’s two seasons. In her sophomore year, Beaver missed the first five basketball games because of volleyball. However, the Randolph Central School graduate still led the team in scoring, total points, assists, steals, field goal percentage and free throw percentage. That earned her team MVP honors along with a spot on the All-Region 3 team. Despite missing 11 games in two seasons, Beaver had 570 points for her career. She played softball in only her sophomore year and led the team in batting, RBIs and extra-base hits to earn All-Region 3 honors. Beaver was also named the Jamestown CC  sophomore women’s Athlete of the Year and was named the Western New York Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year, which included Division I schools. She was also named to the Region 3 All-Academic team.

2. Lee Guzzo - Wrestling - 1973-75

The only wrestler to win a national championship at Jamestown CC was Lee Guzzo. That capped his 1974-75 season with a 35-0 record in dual meets and tournaments. He went on to wrestle at North Carolina State.

3. Leda Peterson - Basketball - 1974-76

Leda Peterson was named the Defensive Player of the Year on the women’s basketball team in 1974-75. The following season, the Falconer Central School graduate was the team Most Valuable Player as the Lady Jayhawks won their only Region 3 title and made their only trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. At the nationals, Peterson was named to the all-tournament team. She averaged more than 20 points in her two seasons and set a game scoring record of 39 in 1975-76. Unfortunately, Jamestown CC didn’t have softball then, so Peterson signed a professional contract with the Buffalo Breskis of the National Women’s Softball League in 1976. She played in the league for two seasons, batting .500 in 1977, before leg injuries ended her career. After reacquiring her amateur status, Peterson accepted a softball scholarship to Peru (Nebraska) State and led the team in batting in both her seasons. In 1997, she was inducted into the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame.

4. Phil Roblee - Wrestling - 1975-77

Phil Roblee was an NJCAA first-team wrestlng All-American in 1975-76 at 158 pounds. He finished third at the national tournament after winning a Region 3 title and being named the outstanding wrestler at the Region 3 Tournament. He finished with a 31-4 record in 1976-77. Roblee was a second-team NJCAA All-American at 150 pounds. He went on to wrestle at Ohio State.

5. Lewis Mack - Basketball - 1973-75

The Jamestown CC men’s basketball team’s all-time leading scorer is still Lewis Mack. The Dunkirk native scored 1,328 points from 1973-75, including 767 during the 1974-75 season. Mack went on to play at Middle Tennessee State and later was an assistant coach for the Jayhawks.

6. Asa Gustafson - Volleyball - 1996-98

Asa Gustafson was an NJCAA Division III women’s volleyball first-team All-American in both her seasons at Jamestown CC. Both seasons the Jayhawks went to the national tournament and compiled a 74-14 record during her career. The Kungsmaclsskolan, Sweden native was third in the nation in hitting efficiency and fifth in kills in 1996. In 1997, she was first in hitting efficiency and fourth in kills. She went on to play at the University of North Carolina.

7. Lotta Arenbe - Volleyball -  1995-96

Lotta Arenbo helped the women’s volleyball team make its first trip to the NJCAA national tournament in 1995 before there were divisions. The outside hitter from Perstorp, Sweden, was a second-team NJCAA All-American.

8. Steve Swan - Wrestling - 1980-82

Steve Swan was a Region 3 wrestling champion at 150 pounds in 1980-81, finished second at the NJCAA national tournament and was named an NJCAA first-team All-American. He finished the season with a 35-2 record. The Southwestern Central school graduate moved up to 167 pounds for the 1981-82 season and was a runner-up in  the Region 3 Tournament and went on to finish eighth at the national tournament to earn third-team NJCAA All-American honors.

9. Greg Stack - Baseball - 1983-85

Jamestown CC’s only NCAA All-American in baseball was Greg Stack in 1985. The Southwesern Central School graduate led the Jayhawks in batting with a .459 average, in home runs with three, in triples with seven and in stolen bases with eight.

10. Carl Jeter - Basketball - 1981-83

Carl Jeter was named to the NJCAA national men’s basketball all-tournament team in 1982 and 1983. For the 1981-82 season, he averaged 13. 4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. At the nationals, he averaged 17.8 points. For the 1982-83 season, he averaged 17.8 points and 6.7 rebounds. In Jamestown CC’s final game at the nationals that clinched fifth place, Jeter scored 35 points.
