Jayhawks Fall to Lackawanna in Season-Opener

JAMESTOWN - The Jamestown Community College men's basketball team fell in a close game to Lackawanna College by the score of 88-83 Saturday evening at the Physical Education Complex.

 

The Jayhawks (0-1) were led offensively by Isaac Allen (Houston, TX/Texas Connection Academy) with 28 points off 11-for-16 (68.8 percent) from the field. Jacob Hougan (Chardon, OH/CHardon HS) added 13 points. Henry Brown, Jr. (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg HS North) and Kane Kenyon (Surrey, Reigate, England (Three Rivers Academy) added 18 and 10 points off the bench. Kyle Butler (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool HS) had a stellar game coming off the bench, dishing out a career-high 14 assists.

 

The Falcons were led by Sean Emfinger with 21 points with Malik Smith adding 15 points, respectively.

 

JCC got out to a quick 5-2 lead in the early going of the game with layups from Allen and Brown, Jr. along with the backend made free throw from Hougan. Lackawanna got their first lead of the game with a layup from Jalen Cassidy to get the 7-5 lead.

 

The teams went tic for tac for an extended period of time throughout the first half with no team gaining much of an advantage. The Falcons had their largest lead of the first half, going on a 17-6 run over a span of four minutes to go up 39-26 with 2:30 remaining in the first half. The Jayhawks cut the deficit to single-digits with back-to-back layup from Brown, Jr., both assists by Butler. Lackawanna would take a 39-30 into the intermission.

 

The Jayhawks kept taking the fight to the Falcons in the second half, cutting their lead to five with baskets from Butler and Brown, Jr.. Lackawanna would quickly get their lead back to 10-points, aming it 46-36 at the 15 minute mark of the second half. Allen got the lead cut to seven this a three-pointer off the assist from Butler.

 

The Falcons got their biggest lead of the game with a dunk by David Pope at the 12 minute mark of the half, making 64-48. With the large deficit, the Jayhawks did not go away easy.

 

JCC made it a five-point game with a pair of free throws from Jafar Yahuza (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) to cap off a 12-4 run with 8:36 remaining in regulation.

 

Lackawanna continued to push their lead to double-digits but the Jayhawks did not go away quietly. Hougan cut the deficit to two-points with the made layup with 2:11 remaining in the game. This would be the closest JCC would get before Sean Emfinger of Lackawanna would ice the game, making five-straight at the free throw line.

 

The Jayhawks went 30-for-67 (44.8 percent) from the floor with the Falcons shooting 30-for-62 (48.4 percent) from the field. JCC took advantage of their extra possessions, scoring 16 fast break points to Lackawanna's eight fast break points.

 

JCC will travel to Region 3 foe Niagara County Community College this Wednesday, March 3rd, for a 7:30 p.m. tip. This will be the first of a three-game road trip.
