Women's Basketball To Face Monroe CC In Region 3 Semifinals

JAMESTOWN – One game at a time. That's the message that Jamestown Community College women's basketball head coach Dave Turnbull has been delivering to his players as they head into the NJCAA Region 3 Division II Tournament this weekend.

"We have to play one game at a time," said Turnbull. "When you've beaten a team three times in the regular season, it's easy to look past them to who we would have to play the following day. Our focus needs to be on Monroe Community College as our last two games came down to the final minute of play."

The Jayhawks have received the No. 2 seed in the tournament, finishing 6-3 in region play, where they will be facing No. 3 Monroe Community College. In their first meeting of the season, JCC cruised to an 86-39 win whereas the last two times the teams faced, they won by a combined seven points.

Outside of the leadership and play from sophomores D'Auzhanay Harden (Erie, PA/Erie HS) and Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights), and freshman Grace Lundmark (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) coach Turnbull will be looking for his role players to be big contributors. More specifically, he's looking for freshman guards Angelique Palacio (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) and Chyann Kelly (Bailey, CO/Platte Canyon HS).

"Palacio and Kelly are going to have to come to play this weekend," Turnbull said. "Harden, Hicks, and Lundmark have been keys to our success but if we are looking to get to the next level, Palacio and Kelly need to have a big weekend for us."

Hicks has returned to her All-American form coming down the final stretch of the regular season, averaging 12.7 points per game while leading the nation in rebounds per game with 16.7 and blocks per game with 2.9. Harden has been to one to run the offense, leading the team with 14.9 points per game while adding 4.9 assists per game. Lundmark has had a solid freshman season, scoring 10.8 points per game while adding 6.4 points per game.

As a team, the Jayhawks are averaging 65.4 points per game and 53.3 rebounds per game in region action.

JCC will be facing the Tribunes who have a 12-14 regular season record to go along with their 3-6 region record. MCC has a number of ways to score with Shariona Blocker and Khamera Muhammad leading the way with 16 points per game. Kennedy Young and Shanique Simms have also been contributors, adding 11 points per game. On the defensive end, MCC is led by Muhammad and Apollonia Desuze who each have double-digit rebounds per game.

As a team, the Tribunes are averaging 60.4 points per game and 46.6 rebounds per game in region play.

The teams meet tomorrow, Saturday 25th, at 1 p.m. with the game being hosted by Niagara County Community College.
