Jayhawks Eye Banner Season in 2023-24

Jayhawks Eye Banner Season in 2023-24

JAMESTOWN, NY - The JCC women's basketball team has their eye set on one prize for the 2023-24 season: hanging a banner in the rafters of the Jamestown Community College PHED Complex. The Jayhawks fell short of that goal last year, losing the NJCAA Region Three Division Two Championship to Niagara County Community College 65-60. Jamestown returns four key contributors from last year's team: sophomores Hayley Dawson (Papamoa, New Zealand / Tauranga Girl's College), Chyann Kelly (Bailey, CO / Platte Canyon HS), Grace Lundmark (Falconer, NY / Falconer HS), and Angelique Palacio (Tucson, AZ / Desert View HS). That quartet scored 29 of Jamestown's 60 points in the championship game as freshmen. Now a year older and wiser, this group is letting the burn of last season's loss fuel them into their final go with the Jayhawks.

"I want to build on our success from last year and just get better as a team and hopefully get that banner," said sophomore guard Hayley Dawson.

"I think all four of the returners are ready to go get a banner. We fell short last year. We are all hungry to be back in the same position as last year," added sophomore guard Chyann Kelly.

"My goal is to get the banner. I have always wanted to hang something in a gym, so that is my goal," said sophomore forward Grace Lundmark.

The team feels a special bond with a group of players from as far away as South Africa and New Zealand, added to several Americans and local players from across Western New York.

"Just taking everyone's ambition. Everyone from far places. Everyone should have that motive to keep going and wanting to win and bring it all on the floor," added sophomore guard Angelique Palacio.

The ladies begin their journey they hope ends with a banner ceremony when they host Lakeland Community College on Wednesday, November 1st, at 5:30 pm.
