Jayhawks in Great Spot After Day 1 of Nationals

FORT PIERCE, FL - Rain couldn't slow down the Jayhawks on day one of the NJCAA national swimming and diving championships, as Jamestown Community College placed eight on the podium through the first two sessions. The night started with Lindsey Spitz capturing a seventh place finish in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 32.33. That put her on the top of the JCC record books. Brady Lindstrom followed that up with a 14th place swim in the men's 50 breaststroke with a 28.60. He also etched his name at the top of the Jayhawks records. Next up for the Jamestown was the distance swim of the 1,000 yard free where Ella Fosberg shaved five seconds off of her personal best with a 12:36:12 good enough for eighth in the nation, and a new program record. Teammate Anna Jones also took part in the 1,000, clipping 23 seconds off her personal best with a 12:44:90, good enough tenth. Flipping to the 50 freestyle, Maxim Johnson recorded a new program best time of 21:46. Meanwhile, on the women's side, Paiden Wittmeyer clocked a 26.77 for a 12th place mark. Checking in on the 200 individual medley, Spitz took 10th, Hayley Dawson 12th, and Stacey Blackler 14th. In the relays, the 800 free team of Dawson, Fosberg, Spitz, and Blackler finished fifth.

"Great first day overall. Really good effort out of the kids. The energy was way better this evening. I told the kids to make a statement and get out to a lead day one. I think day two and three are our stronger days. We get Madison Kramer in the waters, the girls are fourth and guys are fighting like crazy. Tomorrow should be a strong day for both teams and we're looking for continued momentum in the right direction," said head coach Todd Conklin.

More program best went down in the diving pool, with Ashlynn Swan finishing fourth in the nation in the one meter, the highest finish ever for a Jayhawk. Fellow diver Shaylyn Owens also made the podium claiming an eighth. In all JCC set four new program records with eight student-athletes reaching All-American status for a top eight finish.

"The weather made everyone one a bit nervous, but it cleared up right before we started which was amazing. Both girls made podium. I am very proud of their performance. We've got some all-American divers," added diving coach Claire Johnson.

After day one, the JCC ladies are fourth overall and first place in non-scholarship. As for the men, they are ninth overall, and third of the non-scholarship teams.

The swimming continues early Thursday morning for session one of day two.
