Spitz Earns All-American; Johnson, Lindstrom Set Program Records in Session 1 of Nationals

FORT PIERCE, FL - Jamestown Community College's swimming and diving teams are in great shape after session one of the NJCAA national championships at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida.

The Jayhawks started quickly with sophomore Lindsey Spitz earning All-American status by finishing top eight in the preliminary round of the women's 50-yard breaststroke. That locked her into the championship final later this evening. Anna Jones continued the fast swims by cutting 23 seconds off her time in the 1,000 freestyle. Flipping to the 50 freestyle, Paiden Wittmeyer earned a spot in the consolation finals with a time of 26.90. Lastly, for the ladies was the 200 individual medley, where Stacey Blackler, Hayley Dawson, and Spitz all claimed a spot in the consolation finals.

On the men's side, Maxim Johnson continued his torrid season breaking his own program record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.37. Johnson will next hit the pool tonight in the consolation finals. Lukas Baer shaved two-tenths off his best time in the 50 free with a 26.24. Another record fell in the 50 breast, as Brady Lindstrom swam a 28.71 in the 50 breaststroke, earning a place in the consolation finals.

"A couple of early tight swims, but the kids bounced back. Brady (Lindstrom) setting a record in his meet set the motivation and movement to go forward. Max (Johnson) was incredible. We're looking to have some more fast swims this evening and put ourselves in a great position after day one," said head coach Todd Conklin.

In the diving pool, both Jayhawks are peaking at the right time, with Ashlynn Swan taking third and Shaylyn Owens eighth in the prelims earning spots in the championship dives of the one meter.

"I'm very happy that both girls made finals. They have to adjust to an outdoor facility and different boards, and I think they did very well under the circumstances. If they can stay focused and settle in they will do even better tonight, " said diving coach Claire Johnson.

The evening session of day one gets underway at 5:30.
