Jayhawks Gear-Up For District Championships

JAMESTOWN – The path to Council Bluffs, Iowa begins this weekend as the Jamestown Community College wrestling team heads east to compete in the 2023 NJCAA Northeast District Championships hosted by Nassau Community College.

 

"This is what we worked for up to this point," said head coach Kris Schimek. "This is a very long season that our student-athletes endure and this is the time to show up. If we want to get to nationals, we have to take care of business this weekend."

 

Starting out for the Jayhawks is sophomore De'Aonte Hutchinson (Baltimore, MD/Edgewood HS) in the 125 pound weight class. Hutchinson has a season record of 17-12 with three wins coming by fall and one win coming back tech. fall. In the 133 pound weight class, sophomore Brendon Ramsey (Panama, NY/Panama HS) will look to redeem himself after taking second-place in this tournament a year ago. Ramsey has a season record of 21-6 with nine wins coming by fall, one by tech. fall, and three by major decision.

 

Freshman Luke Potts (Pittsburgh, PA/West Allegheny HS) will make his postseason debut in the 141 pound weight class, bringing in a 17-6 record with him. Potts had seven wins come by fall and one come by major decision. Sophomore James Rankin (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) will look to defend his championship he won a year ago at 149 pound weight class. On the season, Rankin has posted a record of 8-5. Donovan Fiscus (Warren, PA/Warren Area HS) will also be making his postseason debut in the 157 pound weight class. Fiscus brings in his 2-7 season record where he had one win by fall.

 

Going back to districts for the third time in his wrestling career, sophomore Alex Christy (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia HS) will do so in the 184 pound weight class. Christy will bring in his 9-14 season record where he won three matches by fall and one by major decision. Brock Johnson (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) will look to become a two-time district championship as well, bringing in a record of 20-10. Of his 20 victories, 12 came by wall of falls, one by tech. fall, and three by major decision. To round out the Jayhawk grapplers is heavyweight Ross Abram(Eden, NY/Eden Central). Abram, a two-time district champion, brings in a season record of 2-0 with both wins coming by fall.

 

The brackets will be revealed late Friday evening with action starting tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
