Jayhawks Have Four Medalist At JCC Open

JAMESTOWN - It was a sight to see Sunday at the Physical Education Complex as the Jamestown Community College wrestling team hosted their annual JCC Open tournament with over 120 participants from NCAA Division II & III institutions, NJCAA, along with former wrestlers trying to relive their hay days.

 

The Jayhawks were led by heavyweight Alex Christy (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia HS) who placed second in his weight class. After receiving a bye in the first round, Christy faced Reagen Soledad of Mercyhurst University where he had the 2:21 fall. In the semifinals, Christy kept the momentum going as he got the fall over Karam Ali of Brockport State in 6:05.

 

Moving onto the finals, Christy squared up against Joe Yanis of Brockport State. In the match, Yanis was able to control the match and win via 10-2 major decision.

 

Brendon Ramsey (Panama, NY/Panama Central) had a solid day on the mat, finishing fourth in the 141 pound weight class. After a bye in the first round, Ramsey got his first win over Dylan Pesock with a 6-1 decision victory. Moving into the semifinals, Ramsey dropped a close 3-2 decision against Cole French of Niagara County Community College.

 

Moving onto the consolation semifinals, Ramsey grinded out a 5-3 decision victory over Ryan McElwee of Ohio Wesleyan University. In the third place match, Ramsey was bested by Matt Ash of NCCC, falling in a 9-6 decision.

 

De'Aonte Hutchinson (Baltimore, MD/Edgewood HS) and James Rankin (Cleveland, OH/Garfield Heights) rounded out the medalist for the Jayhawks with each finishing fifth in their respective weight classes.

 

Hutchinson had a tough start to his day, falling to Justin Amendola of Cortland State by an 11-0 major decision. After a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, Hutchinson gutted out a 3-1 decision win over Dylan Mayer of Gannon University. Moving onto the next round, Hutchinson received a medical forfeit over Isaiah Jackson of Brockport State.

 

In the consolation semifinals match, Hutchinson was bested by Amendola once again, this time falling by an 11-3 major decision. In the fifth place match, Hutchinson got the fall over Wesley Licht of NCCC, needing 1:26 to do so. This was Hutchinson's second fall over Licht in as many days.

 

Rankin found himself in the quarterfinal match after receiving a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals match, Rankin made quick work over Austin Parker of Thiel College, getting the fall in 1:46. In the semifinals match, Rankin was bested by Freddy Eckles by a 17-1 tech. fall. In the consolation semifinals match, Rankin fell to Bryce Wittman ove Ohio Wesleyan University by a fall in 55 seconds.

 

In the fifth place match, Rankin grinded out a 6-4 decision victory over Elijah Hernandez from the University of Pitt-Bradford.

 

Joey Pillittieri (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) and Brock Johnson (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) also picked up one win on the day.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action on Friday, February 11th, as they travel to the University of Pitt-Bradford for a dual at 7 p.m.
