Jayhawks Place Three at the NYS Collegiate Championships

CORTLAND - Continuing their strong start to the season, the Jamestown Community College wrestling team placed 10th at the New York State Collegiate Championships with 35 team points.

 

The Jayhawks had three athletes place on the day with Trenton Donahue (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area HS) placing second in the 141 pound class, Joey Pillittieri (Falconer, NY/Falconer HS) placed third in the 141 pound class, with Ross Abram (Eden, NY/Eden Central) placing sixth int he 174 pound class.

 

Donahue started his day with an 8-1 decision win over Cameron Pleninger of Merchant Marine in the first round. In the quarterfinal match, Donahue earned a 16-0 tech. fall win over Ryan Holt of SUNY Cortland. 

 

Making his way to the semifinals, Donahue scrapped his way to a 13-9 decision victory over CJ Walz of Oswego State. In the championship match, Donahue went to the limit against Travis Jones of Ithaca College, needing extra time to determine a winner. In overtime, Jones got the necessary points to get the 8-6 sudden victory-1 win.

 

Pillittieri started his day against Cameron Groff of Oneonta State, getting the fall in 4:27. In the quarterfinal match, Pillittieri grinded out a 5-3 decision victory over Mike Barker of SUNY Cortland. Competing in the semifinal, Pillittieri fell to Jones via pinfall.

 

Staying alive for a third-place finish in the consolation bracket, Pillittieri edged out Sean Peterson of Alfred State, earning the 5-4 decision win. In the third-place match, Pillittieri took care of Walz, getting the fall in 4:57.

 

Abram received a bye in the first round of his weight class and moved on to face Jack Heydorn of New York University. In their match, Abram got the fall, needing 47 seconds to do so. Moving onto the quarterfinals, Abram fell to Dominick Esposito of Merchant Marine by fall in the second period.

 

Moving on to the consolation bracket, Abram got a 15-3 major decision victory over Corey Snyder of SUNY Brockport. Continuing on, Abram earned a medical forfeit win over Zach Stedeford of RIT.

 

In the consolation semifinals, Abram was defeated by Mike Galton of Alfred State in an 11-3 major decision. Looking to place fifth on the day, Abram looked to redeem himself against Esposito. Esposito got the better of Abram again, winning via 13-4 major decision.



Heavyweight Alex Christy (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia HS) earned two victories on the day with 125 pounder De'Aonte Hutchinson (Baltimore, MD/Edgewood HS) also earning a win on the day.

 

The Jayhawks will next be in action on Saturday, December 4th, as they compete in the Niagara County Community College Open.
