The Jamestown Community College golf team began their season last weekend in the Syracuse area, playing three matches in frigid conditions with the first being played against Cayuga CC at Highland Park Country Club.

Anthony Miller shot 82 to open the season while Dillan LaBarbera finished with an 83, Nick Mole 95 and Marina Kessler 103.

On Saturday, the Jayhawks traveled to Timber Banks to take on Onondaga CC where Miller once again led the way with an 83, while LaBarbera shot 85, Mole 102 and Kessler 105.

Sunday saw Jamestown CC take on Tompkins Cortland CC at Elm Tree Country Club in 41-degree weather where Miller and Mole were unaffected by the cold, both shooting 76.

LaBarbera would finish that match with an 82 while Kessler notched her best round of the year at 93.

"I was so proud that these kids separated the harsh conditions and stuck with the process of each shot," said first-year coach Dan Vona.

Vona is a 1987 graduate of Silver Creek Central School and a 1986 NYSPHSAA champion who is an alumnus of Penn State University's golf program, where he was a top-five finisher in several NCAA Division I tournaments.

"This is what I try to teach, staying focused. Don't look back on the bad shots but rather take them as an opportunity to hit good shots," he said.

This week Jamestown CC will take to the road again against Mohawk Valley CC at Oneida Community Golf Course on Friday.
