Spotlight Athlete of the Week

This week’s spotlight athlete is Alec Ambrose, a sophomore member of our golf team. He decided to come and play for the Jayhawks because he had a friend that was also coming here to play, as well as Coach Ryan Jones last year making him eager to come join. He also was awarded the USA Scholarship, so that also factored into Alec wanting to come to JCC.

This season, there is a new coach for the golf team, Richard Swanson, and Alec says that he is excited to have him as a coach this year because of his talent and experience. Swanson is also just as excited as the rest of the team for the upcoming season and they are all eager to hang up another banner.

When on campus Alec can usually be found in the physics lab, or the learning center tutoring. He really enjoys tutoring because it’s fun, easy money, and he enjoys being able to help other people out with their studies.

As for college athletics, Alec really enjoys all of the different courses that he gets to play on, because otherwise he probably wouldn’t get to play on them himself. He also enjoys the competition, and playing with former competitors from high school that he can now call his teammates.

After JCC, he doesn’t plan on continuing golf, but he does plan on heading to the University of Buffalo to complete a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

As for advice to other athletes, he says, “Just be coachable and put in the necessary work. If you have a coach at this level, they know what they are talking about. It’s also important to focus on your grades and keep them up because there are other things in life besides your sport, and grades are a huge part of that. Stay hungry!”
