BINGHAMTON — Jamestown Community College completed a weekend sweep of Broome CC with another pair of NJCAA Region 3 Division III wins Sunday at Hornet Field.

The Jayhawks scored seven runs in the sixth inning of Game One before holding off the Hornets in the seventh inning for an 8-7 victory.

In the nightcap, Ryan Johnson threw a complete-game five-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Jamestown CC won, 6-1.

The Jayhawks took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning of Game One as Bryce Sherrard led off with a walk, went to second on Noah Whalen's sacrifice bunt and scored on Nelson Rivera's RBI single.

Jamestown CC added on in the top of the sixth inning. DJ Yates led off with a single and Noah Weinstein walked before Matt Hair's RBI single. Steven Krystofiak then reached on an error and Sherrard was hit by a pitch before Rivera's bases-loaded RBI single. Andrew Latona later reached on an fielder's choice and Cameron Haberberger came through with a two-run single for the Jayhawks.

The Hornets answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Jamestown CC starter John White, who earned the win with 5• innings of five-hit, two-run pitching. White struck out three and walked two.

Broome CC made a game of it in the seventh inning, scoring five runs before Krystofiak came in to shut the door with a pair of fly outs to center field.

Johnson hit a batter, allowed a single and then gave up an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning in Game Two before settling down to retire 11 Hornets in a row. By that point, the Jayhawks had taken a 4-1 lead.

"That was by far his best outing of his college career. He was very dominant," Jamestown CC coach Matt Cummings said of Johnson. "He really mixed up his pitches well and he hit his spots. The biggest thing was that he worked ahead in the count and stayed ahead."

Jamestown CC scored all four of those runs in the fourth inning. Yates and Weinstein walked to open the inning before Hair's pinch-hit two-run double to the right-center field gap. Brett Payne traded places with Hair on an RBI double of his own before an RBI single from Whalen scored Payne.

After Weinstein caught the first three Jayhawks' wins of the weekend, Cummings turned to Gavin Beaumont in the second game Sunday.

"We were going to mix up the lineup a little bit for Game Two," Cummings said. "Gavin did a great job behind the plate for us. When the opportunity came he made the most of it."

In the top of the seventh inning, Haberberger led off with a single, Yates walked and Weinstein singled to load the bases before an RBI single from Hair and a sacrifice fly from Payne.

Payne finished with two doubles in Game Two.

"He's another guy that has been working hard during practice," Cummings said of Payne. "He earned his opportunity and made the most of it."

With the four-win weekend, the Jayhawks (8-10 overall) now sit at 8-8 in the region, tied for fourth place with Finger Lakes CC. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will take part in the regional playoffs.

"Saturday we handled our business by winning at home. The good teams win on the road as well, that's what we did (Sunday)," Cummings said. "Our guys knew the importance of this series. … The guys really worked their tails off."

Jamestown CC travels to Dryden for a doubleheader with Tompkins Cortland CC on Tuesday. The same two teams will play a doubleheader at Diethrick Park on Thursday.
