DJ Yates is a freshman on the Jayhawks baseball team at Jamestown Community College. He is majoring in Early Childhood Education with plans to eventually work as a teacher. Yates attended high school in his hometown of New London, OH, and played on the football and baseball teams there. Naturally, the JCC Jayhawks are his favorite sports team, and he looks forward to contributing to the athletic program here this year.

Spotlight Athlete of the Week

This week’s spotlight athlete is DJ Yates, a freshman member of our baseball team. When deciding on wanting to come to JCC and play for the Jayhawks, DJ said that after multiple discussions with Coach Matt Cummings as well as multiple visits to the campus, he decided that coming here would be a great fit for him to advance both his athletics and academics.

When he’s not playing baseball he really enjoys meeting new people and getting to know the other student athletes. He also enjoys hanging out with his teammates at his apartment and playing video games.

When it comes to college athletics, DJ enjoys the change in the level of competition than what he is used to. He says that it has really helped him become both a better player on the field, as well as a better student in the classroom.

As for a 5 year plan, he plans on transferring to a four-year school and playing baseball there too, as well as finishing his bachelor’s and master’s degree eventually reaching his goal of becoming an elementary math teacher.

For other athletes, he says, “Work hard to your best ability and eventually that will help you be successful.”
