Coach Anderson: 'These Guys, They Are ... A Quality Group'

Coming off of a 2015 season in which the Jamestown Community College men's soccer team went 3-13-2, a roster that features an abundance of skill and athleticism provides plenty to be optimistic about when it comes to the this year's campaign.

"Last year was a combination (of things). Our record was not good," head coach Pat Anderson said. "It was a combination of a lack of depth and ... injury concerns. The combination of the two we just couldn't overcome. We lost a lot of games because we just became worn down as the game went on. ... Overall, we considered (last year) disappointing in the fact that we weren't able to win games, not disappointing from the effort standpoint, but definitely disappointing from the fact that we weren't able to show what we were capable of doing."

This year, the first position group Anderson highlighted was his forwards, who will include Jackson Rybicki, Tate Reynolds and Jacob Turner.

"They are all fast," Anderson emphasized. "They are skilled. They've all shown that they have the ability to put the ball in the net. It looks like they could be a really, really threatening group. They seem to work well together and they do a great job of putting the ball on the net when they shoot. I'm hoping for some really good things out of them."

The midfield position could consist of Ray Amborski, Ben Roesser, Grant Degouveia, Christian Fuentes, Brandon Greiner and Devin Drummond.

"On the inside, we've got Ray Amborski playing offensive center-mid," Anderson said. "He's looked very good and he's backed up by a guy by the name of Ben Roesser. Ben has also looked really good. I think between the two of them, that center-mid position is pretty well handled.

"On the outside, we've got four guys playing on the outside and they've been really pretty close to equal. They are all skilled and fast, so we feel pretty good about them. Grant Degouveia and Christian Fuentes are going to start, but they are being pressed really hard by Brandon Greiner and Devin Drummond, who have both had excellent preseasons."

Defensively, keep an eye out for the likes of Hamish Antill, Judah Herr, Dan Skinner and Arsel Muangara. Other names to look for are Zachary English and Andrew Ward.

"We have one guy coming back, Hamish Antill. He's going to play inside for defense," Anderson said. "And we have three other guys, two of them are (Westfield-Brocton) guys. Judah Herr is going to play on the inside, Dan Skinner is going to play on the outside and then on the outside on the other side is going to be Arsel Muangara. ... The four of them have looked very good together up to this point in time. We are going to be a little short on depth as a couple of our other guys try to learn and build into that. But in front of them, playing the defensive inside mids, Zach English has looked exceptionally good and Andrew Ward is going to come in and back him up."

Adriano Derossi, Jordan Lymberis and Travis Fye could all potentially see action in net for the Jayhawks.

"We've got three of them and two of them are fighting it out for the starting job," Anderson said. "Adriano Derossi and Jordan Lymberis have been fighting it right out through the preseason and I'm not sure anyone has gained a true edge, so right now (the starter) could be one or the other. ...Travis Fye from Jamestown is coming in and he's serving as out third goalkeeper, working hard to try and catch up to the other two."

Anderson believes the Jayhawks certainly have the potential to make some things happen on the pitch this fall.

"I really think we've got the ability to get into the regional playoffs and make a statement in the regional playoffs where we make ourselves a true contender," Anderson stressed. "You never know when you start the season whether that's actually going to work out. There are way too many variables to make any kind of reasonable judgment. But we have the skills to be really good and if we can stay healthy and if we continue to show the degree of intelligence playing the game that we seem to have up to this point, we could actually go in there and compete with the very best. ... These guys, they are definitely a quality group."

According to the NJCAA official website, Jamestown CC's first taste of game action will come Tuesday at home against the Gannon University jayvee team.
