The Jayhawks' Carlo Rodriguez walked and Paul Tripi singled before Roberto Aracena's RBI single in the top of the first inning in Game 1, but the Panthers answered right back with a run in the bottom half of the frame and then took the lead for good with a five-run third inning off Jamestown CC starter Caleb Caldwell.

"What really hurt us was our lack of defense behind the pitching," Jamestown CC coach Matt Cummings said. "Our pitchers threw strikes and made TCCC put the ball in play but the defense let us down not making enough plays behind them."

The Jayhawks (1-5, 0-2) made it 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but could not get any closer.

In Game 2, Jamestown CC again jumped on top, 2-0, in the top of the first inning as German Nolasco reached on an error, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Aracena walked ahead of an RBI single by Caldwell. Reid Bjork was then hit by a pitch to force in a run.

Tompkins Cortland CC took control with a seven-run bottom of the first off Jayhawks starter Braiden Blair, and added a single run in the second before three more in the third to lead 11-2.

"We are not giving our starting pitchers the support that they deserve. They are getting ground balls and pop flies, and we weren't making plays,"Cummings said. "It was extremely windy and cold, but both teams had to play in it. It seemed to affect us more than TCCC."

The Jayhawks answered with a six-run fourth inning. Jake Brown picked up his first collegiate hit, Nolasco walked and Rodriguez walked before an RBI single by Aracena. Evan Harrison then walked and Elwin Gomez walked to force in another run. Spencer TeWinkle capped the inning with a bases-clearing three-run double to make it 11-8.

Rodriguez walked, moved up on a passed ball, went to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball in the top of the fifth inning, but the game was called due to darkness in the bottom half of the frame.

"Offensively we're putting the ball in play, which is a good thing. We are still looking for timely hits," Cummings said. "We have too many guys stuck on base. We really feel strongly that if we can get some defensive support we'll find our groove very quickly."

Jamestown CC returns to action with a doubleheader Saturday at SUNY Broome before hosting the Hornets in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at Diethrick Park.
