CANANDAIGUA — Jamestown Community College pitchers combined to allow just one run and eight hits over 14 innings in an NJCAA Region 3 Division III doubleheader sweep of Finger Lakes CC on Friday afternoon.

David Baxter went six innings, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out five and walking four as the Jayhawks won Game 1, 2-0.

In Game 2, Jacob Morgan threw five innings of four-hit, one-run ball while striking out two and walking two in a 6-1 come-from-behind victory.

Steve Krystofiak earned the save in both wins, striking out five in three combined innings of work.

"Pitching was tremendous for us," Jamestown CC coach Matt Cummings said. "In Game 1, David Baxter got the start and did exactly what we wanted him to do and what he's capable of.

"I have to give a lot of credit to assistant coach Doug Clark who called a great day for us," Cummings added. "Our pitchers executed the pitches he was calling."

The Jayhawks (4-6, 4-4) took a 1-0 lead right off the bat in Game 1 as Carlo Rodriguez led off with a walk and scored on a two-out error by the Finger Lakes CC (11-9, 7-3) right fielder that allowed Taylor Byrd to reach.

In the third inning, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to start the frame and scored on a two-out RBI double by Byrd.

"He's been in the cleanup spot for us the whole year," Cummings said of Byrd. "He's a kid who's been working very hard in the offseason trying to prepare himself for the opportunity and making the most of it. When we have him at the plate with runners in scoring position it gives our offense a good chance to put up crooked numbers."

The Lakers left the bases loaded in the first inning and left a pair of runners on base three other times in the Game 1 loss.

In Game 2, Finger Lakes CC scored a run in the bottom of the third inning and led 1-0 late into the game.

The Jayhawks' Robert Herrera reached on an error to open the top of the sixth inning and then stole second. DJ Yates was hit by a pitch and Byrd came through again with a two-run double to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Matt Hair then flew out to right field and Byrd advanced to third. After Krystofiak singled home Byrd, Finger Lakes CC went to the bullpen. After a strikeout, Caleb Caldwell doubled to put runners at second and third, but a pop out ended the threat.

Jamestown CC scored another three runs in the seventh inning as Herrera singled with one out and Yates followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Byrd scored Herrera with a single and Hair followed with an RBI double. With one out, Krystofiak drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

"When you're pitching staff is grinding all day long for us … we knew we were only down a run," Cummings said. "With the heart of our lineup, we have a lot of confidence in those guys. We knew good things were going to happen once we put the ball in play."

Jamestown CC will now go into back-to-back home doubleheaders with Onondaga CC at Diethrick Park today and Sunday. This afternoon, games will be at 4 p.m. and approximately 6:30 while Sunday's games will start at noon and approximately 2:30.

"To go on the road, on a makeup date not on our original schedule … we usually don't play on Fridays," Cummings said. "To go beat a quality team like Finger Lakes is huge for us. The region is up in the air. Everyone is beating everyone. On any given day, anybody has a chance to win."
