Swimming and Diving Regionals / Nationals Preview

Swimming and Diving Regionals / Nationals Preview

This past weekend the Men's and Women's swimming and diving team competed in their last regular season meet and are now preparing for post season regionals and nationals competition. Regionals will begin Friday February 10th and continue on until Sunday the 12th at Monroe Community College while the National competition follows two weeks later from March 1st to the 4th at Erie Community College's Flickenger Center in Buffalo, NY.

The team is readily preparing for the upcoming competitions when, talking with coach Mike Giambruno, he has high hopes for both upcoming meets. When it comes to both Regionals and Nationals, Monroe is the biggest competition for the Jayhawks, not only in the post-season, but throughout the regular season as well.

Even though, it has been an overall good season, they were hoping to be a little more competitive this year. One of the biggest challenges for both teams is the athletic-academic cross-over. Many of the athletes have class conflicts when it comes to practice time, so some aren't in the pool as much as others, because it leads to shorter, or missed practice time.

When it comes to Regionals, Giambruno has a positive outlook. "I really enjoy all of the other different school that come to Regionals, it gives us an opportunity to compete against schools that are outside of our regular league meets." For the women's team, the top performers going in are Christene Kuzminski, and Jessica Schneggenburger, and on the Men's, both Charlie Simons, and Matthew Caldwell. "I expect good swims from all of the swimmers, but I expect big things out of the four of them, they have a really strong competitive spirit, and I think that it will really help them succeed at these big meets."

So far the season has been off to a good start, "I think that the season has gone pretty much as expected, there has been a lot of good swims from everyone on the team, and I am still looking for better swims from almost everyone in the post season."
