Athlete Spotlight of the Week

January 27, 2016

Andrew Caldwell is the Athlete Spotlight of the Week for January 27, 2016.  He is a member of the Jayhawks swimming and diving team, and has earned great success there so far in his collegiate career.

Caldwell said his parents pushed him to join the team at JCC the summer prior to his freshman year.  He also wanted a way to stay in shape and many of his friends were coming here.  He's always been a swimmer since he was very young, so the JCC swim team seemed like a familiar place.  His decision has not disappointed.  He really loves the away meets because of the change of scenery and the things the team does in their downtime.  "The meets themselves are pretty awesome because they can be really relaxed while still maintaining a competitiveness and seriousness when it comes to the races," Caldwell said.

For the season, Caldwell hopes to get below a minute in the 100 m back and get on the podium in the national meet.  He plans to transfer to the University of Albany for a bachelor's degree in Informatics.  From this comes the goal of a job as a cybersecurity analyst.

To incoming prospective college athletes, Caldwell says, "If you're on the fence about collegiate athletics, just take the plunge and do it.  It's worth the new friends and experiences you wouldn't get without it."
