Jayhawks Finish As WNYAC Tournament Runner-Ups

BUFFALO - Heading into the Western New York Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday morning as the No. 1 seed, the Jamestown Community College volleyball team finished as runner-ups.

The Jayhawks (17-10) started the day with back-to-back 2-0 wins over Niagara County Community College and Monroe Community College to set up the championship match against Erie Community College. In the championship match, JCC was bested in three sets by the Kats.

In their first match of the day, the Jayhawks took care of the Thunderwolves handedly, posting set scores of 25-18 and 25-10. JCC was paced by freshmen Rian Finch (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) and Cadance Main (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) who had six kills each. Sophomore Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) chipped in with five kills. The offense went through sophomore Madison Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central) who finished with 22 assists.

 

On defense, freshman Sydney Ulasewicz (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) led the way with seven digs while Pumford added six digs.

Rolling into their second match of the day, the Jayhawks continued to build upon their momentum where they posted set scores of 25-12 and 25-20. Sophomore Emma McCarthy (Olean, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) led the attack with seven kills with Finch adding six more kills to her day. Freshman Mikala Einink (Clymer, NY/Clymer Central) picked up three service aces while three Jayhawks added two service each to help the offense. Johnson facilitated the offense, adding 19 assists to her day.

 

On defense, Ulasewicz had nine digs with Pumford adding seven digs. Freshman Bri McEwen (Silver Creek, NY/Silver Creek Central) made her presence felt at the net, collecting three total blocks (2 solo, 1 assist).

In the WNYAC Championship Match, the Jayhawks grinded out a first set win of 27-25 before falling in the next two highly contested sets of 21-25 and 13-15. Main led the attack in the match with 11 kills while McCarthy added five kills. Johnson added 23 assists to her total on the day while adding two service aces. Sophomore Breanna Gilbert-Hopkins (Falconer, NY/Chautauqua Lake Central) also added two service aces, respectively.

 

On defense, Ulasewicz finished with 16 digs with Gilbert-Hopkins adding 10 digs.

 

The Jayhawks will now prepare for the NJCAA Region 3 Tournament on Saturday, October 29th, where they will be the No. 4 seed. JCC will face No. 5 Erie Community College, No. 2 Jefferson Community College and the winner between SUNY Broome Community College and Onondaga Community College. All games will be played at Niagara County Community College with play beginning at 10 a.m.
